Basically what gaming industry insiders used to prove that gamers talking about boycotts were full of shit (before it backfired on them).

So for context, it was a huge deal. Essentially IW/Activision assfucked PC gamers with a 1:1 console port and while by 2023 standards a PC port that runs half-decently and has keyboard text chat seems like a dream, in 2009 a game without dedicated servers/mods/other PC specific features was an insult. This was such a big deal that not only was the older CoD server list loaded with servers saying to boycott them, but there were even short lived memes from that community like "not balanced for lean" (a feature in PC versions of CoD1-WaW, BO1, and BO2).

Of course the meme that industry types and "heh gamers" people throw around misses the bigger picture: PC gamers had the last laugh when the new generation of PC gamers didn't give a shit about CoD, and the older one was angry at IW for fucking over the PC. Thanks to their choice of matchmaking it bit them in the end as the only way to play MW2-AW on the PC is to use a dedicated server mod like IW4x or similar, and the player counts for the official Steam versions are as dead as a doornail. In fact the only older CoDs on the PC to have players are the ones without matchmaking or to have a server list/mods as well (namely BO3, which has a community mod to fix exploits). The only reason CoD on PC has "players" is thanks to F2P warzone, and matchmaking pairing PC players with Xbox players.
