   @strypey @be @graydon I view I have regarding Plausible is that: webservers are sent some configuration info to help the server determine how best to respond. Plausible barely gathers anything more than webservers receive already, their javascript basically serves as a captcha.

   so in principle I'm a little more lenient towards web analytics.

   P.S. Their hueristics would misclassify my work as bots, & my hueristics would misclassify them as trackers. I don't think either of us are bothered.

     I recently read a discussion document on reforming W3C. One of the more intriguing discussion points was that some tech standards ought to involuntary, ie standard bodies ought to be giving formal advice to governments on tech regulation. Maybe analytics is one area that needs this? So the public and policy-makers aren't in a position of trusting this or that company.

     @graydon It's interesting to note the similarities between the Go proposal and Plausible Analytics. Both aim for gathering data in such a minimally intrusive way that they do not ask for opting in. But one comes from Google and the other comes from a small company that markets itself as an alternative to Google Analytics, and so reactions to them are pretty much opposites.
