My hot take is that we're just repeating what the industry experienced in the 50's when television "killed" Hollywood movies. Hollywood isn't going anywhere, and the real thing you should be concerned about is video games being assimilated into Hollywood like television was. Video games becoming more and more cinematic expressions while studios gradually get more video game adaptations out the door like The Mario Movie and Fallout.

  @weaf @Shadowman311 The difference now though is Hollywood is being wrecked by runaway corporate control and nepotism. So you have megacorps not willing to take any chances, and on the creative end you have writers who can't write their way out of a paper bag.
  
  Not to mention they can't help themselves when it comes to injecting clunky, divisive politics into every piece of media. It's why they constantly remake old IPs with a fresh coat of poz, with the predictable results.

  @weaf @Shadowman311 I will say though that one thing might help them out somewhat - video game adaptations, specifically of Nintendo IPs. Nintendo is very protective of its properties, and you can see that in the Super Mario Bros movie from last year.

  @DW2 @SIC_Guy @LordMordred @weaf While I don't prefer anime it's rise in prominence among the youth, and the wests total inability to match it in almost all it's animation fields is a big threat to Hollywood that should not be overlooked. When Anime has its Game of Thrones moment it's not going to be good for tinsel town. Especially given how uninterested Japanese firms are with getting "Western" intervention in their projects.

If things weren't so fucked up culturally right now, anime would be just as niche in America as it was in the 90s.

  @weaf @Shadowman311 @SIC_Guy @LordMordred Admittedly I don't watch much anime, but from what I gather anime writers are at least capable of writing a decent story, plus they don't go out of their way to alienate their fanbases.
  
  Maybe not a high bar to cross, but at least they put the effort in. Western cartoons not only look ugly, but they sound as if they were written by an AI trained on Reddit posts and Rick and Morty episodes.
