thinking to combine @olimex ESP32-GATEWAY with Reform motherboard to make a small ARM server with BMC (console and LPC control via ESP's ethernet) and built in UPS (Reform's LiFePO4 system)

minute (mntmn@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 10-Feb-2023 19:16:16 JST minute the only remaining question is the case form factor, how to make good use of 19" rack space or be compatible with it

minute (mntmn@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 10-Feb-2023 20:09:38 JST minute @brot @olimex LS1028A primarily, but any module we support, incl CM4 which is of course much cheaper. LS1028A and iMX78MP can do hardware encryption which CM4 can't, if i'm not mistaken

brot (brot@social.tchncs.de)'s status on Friday, 10-Feb-2023 20:09:39 JST brot @mntmn @olimex I currently use a rasspi4 and two 8tb LUKS encrypted USB drives as my offsite backup for personal stuff, stored in the garage of a friend with fast internet. Something like you mentioned would be way better, since BMC access for remote stuff is way better than having to drive over there. However the pi4 is doing a remarkable job dealing with both luks and btfs zstd encryption. What CPU do you have in mind for that project?

minute (mntmn@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 11-Feb-2023 00:43:20 JST minute @vikings thanks, very useful! our current boards would easily fit into 1U flat (4x next to each other). or it could be mounted at 90 degrees in 3U like a blade, perhaps up to 20 boards

Vikings 🌌 🌐 (vikings@social.vikings.net)'s status on Saturday, 11-Feb-2023 00:43:21 JST Vikings 🌌 🌐 @mntmn I have so many (silly) ideas... starting with quick & dirty: take the cheapest available 1/2/3U case one can find (InterTech?) and solder some standoffs on it. The UPS could probably be placed behind/in front horizontally. IMHO 19 inch solutions don't need to be pretty, but cheap and practical for the operator.
Battery life won't become an issue? Our DC runs @26-27C in the cold aisle.
Com. hosting: UPSs are already there, so an integrated UPS is more something for the home user? /thum
