   I watched 10 episodes of Ergo Proxy in the weekend, the story is a mess and there's more gay shit with male characters than fan service with the main girl which is unforgivable, I'm never taking recommendations from some anituber faggot again

     But IIRC it's one of *those* from the era, like Lain. We watched Lain recently. It's a similar mess and I really don't like these "2deep4u" anime anymore

     I don't agree but it's also not a show you should recommend to people, it's not good, it's more like "oh wow look it's so 2006 or some shit". Anituvers are retarded so maybe he didn't understand it and thought it was massive genius shit...

     Now, after watching 1000+ anime: "The story is a fucking incomprehensible mess that actually doesn't mean much but it's hidden under layers upon layers of weird "cool" nonsense. It's all style and no substance"
     
     They're anime of that era, you had to experience them when they were relatively new, when "mass" anime and seinen level of stuff were very new to Western audience and you had to be a teenager to young adult. Unfortunately, that specific style of anime from that era is really better left in the past as a good memory. Nowadays, there's just so much more and so much better around, and easily accessible too

     @romin @deadheat yes, I didn't rewatch all of it on the movie night, but it's like the poster boy of that kind of anime of the era. The eps I watched again I've found boring and I know that all of the christian imagery is all fucking nonsense that means nothing

     But the reality is that these shows are "2deep4u" slop for teenagers. It's actually slop pretending to be high art by obfuscating how meaningless the whole thing is by putting layers upon layers of nonsense, that people have treated as high art for ages but then are just finding out it's actually slop

     The 2deep4u shit is great when you're a teenager but when you're a grown mayun it gets tired. After a point it needs to stop having merely the allusion to depth, but the actual presence of it.

     I'm not gonna pretend most other anime are high art either, but with these shows, there's them pretending to be something they aren't and it's... annoying?
     
     I've praised stuff like Revue Starlight for being this, but not attempting to hide behind layers of bullshit. It's much more accessible and for the stuff you just cannot make out yourself the director is fully open about what means what

"i put crosses in it because it looks cool" is exactly something a widely respected artfilm director like lynch or tarkovsky would say. but its different for anime because its "for teens" and because it exists within a slop genre? what the fuck is robocop then, just slop or 3deep5u arthouse? can something not be both? is it impossible to read into a childrens book for an adult interpretation?

     youre right that eva is nothing without these. but so is almost every narrative artistic work. theres a reason were okay with every fictional story following the same heros journey. art appreciation on narratives analyzes HOW the story is told, not just the plot.
     anything capable of being artful, can make for itself a vibe that is unique. anyone who can appreciate that vibe, can make for themself an interpretation that is unique.

     @m0xEE @Pawlicker @coolboymew @romin @why The story starts with quickly throwing at you mystery on top of mystery, the robot virus, the monsters, the rulers of the city with their cryptic actions and motives, but it does that without letting you know barely anything about the characters and the world around them, so you just feel lost, and it's boring. I'm 10 eps in so I'm more familiar with them now, but I'm not feeling it, the motivations and actions of these characters make no sense to me, especially since they are still so underdeveloped, we get more mysteries but no answers to the previous ones, and the anime even wastes time with things that go nowhere like the commune outside the city.

     What's wrong with Ergo Proxy though? I don't even know why people tend to think it's something deep, like why? Because there are characters named Lacan and Derrida? It's an entertaining road movie with solid (unlike Lain) character development and an absolutely disappointing ending. I have rewatched it recently and enjoyed it probably more than I did watching it long ago
     When I was younger some characters (read Pino — probably Iggy too, well, most androids) seemed annoying, now they seem okay to me.
     Unlike Texhnolyze that I have finished watching for the first time last year, but have made at least five attempts before that, and it was still a pain to watch, if you want something that screams boring, but "deep" — look no further. Well, unlike it, Ergo Proxy was entertaining to watch, it's no high art, but it has a well done (unlike Lain) story and impressive, especially for the time (just like Lain) visuals — what's not to like? I would probably recommend it :marseyshrug:
