Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks (washedoutgundampilot@poa.st)'s status on Wednesday, 08-Feb-2023 11:58:03 JST Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks @DW2 I have a theory that there’s a kind of shift in pop music, too, where people’s active listening strays into more niche interests with the rise of ipods/earbuds.
Now, top-40 swill is meant to be somewhat unremarkable because it’s designed to be background noise, something piped over loudspeakers in public to provide sound cover and make things feel populated and upbeat.

The people still using traditional media apparatuses that add into view counting for nielsen metrics are boomers - and they only like music they listened to when their endocrine system allowed them to feel the rush of youth
Everyone I see on the cool side uses stuff like soundcloud or youtube, while the normies use stream apps like itunes or spotify. The latter count their own metrics, most likely, and from what I remember apple just gives a cheesy heat graph to show relative popularity, not actual numbers

In recent years there’s a huge resurgence in appreciation for the american-inspired JPOP / City Pop (and other japanese music) from the 70s and 80s. Just look at Mariya Takeuchi’s Plastic Love, Miki Matsubara’s Stay With Me, (i recommend looking at the youtube recommendations below these particular videos for a great musical rabbit hole to go down) tens of millions of views decades after the song’s release - music which is definitevely more complex than modern slop
