   2013: “dude this game sucks” 2014 “ugh, did you see this shit? Worthless” 2015 “fuck this man I’m never playing another {franchise} again” 2016 “holy shit they’re gonna release skyrim AGAIN? Faggots, this industry is dead” 2017 “holy shit it’s just lukewarm microwaved bullshit why even buy this?” 2018 (do I REALLY need to walk you through these?)

   It’s getting worse, every release. Every single game you buy, you sit next to me and talk my ear off about all the problems and shortcomings of this industry who keeps bending you over for a buttfuckin’ every month. But EVERY SINGLE TIME something new shows up a few weeks later and you all queue right back up to buy it and start the process anew.

     THEN DO LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE MAN. There are so many better, more enjoyable hobbies, but people love coming back to the only trough of slop they know.

     They’ll buy this month’s $70 bullshit faggot extravaganza and whine about how bad it is until the NEXT $70 bullshit faggot extravaganza comes out, spending time watching people argue and bitch about both of them until they turn that game off for the last time and never, ever think about it again for the rest of their life. How many games are like that for you? Those garbage ones you finish and literally never touch again for the rest of your life? That’s most of them for me.

     At this point when I’m paired off with a dude under 40 with a BMI more than 35 or so I know I’m in store for a boomeresque 6-hour convo from a guy who just can’t let go

     Video gaming alone is not all that different from just locking yourself in a koomenkaven, but playing with people who’ll be a part of your life forever can be time well spent and treasured memories.

     (friends don’t really count, it’s very rare you’ll have lifelong bonds with any of them, so most of the time it’s wasted unless you have a long track record and you know they’ll be there for you when you need them)

     Turning on a game on a weekday night and then turning the thing off is hardly the best use of time but it's not really any worse than the people who do that with kikeflix or TV... which we'd all agree is a poor use of time.
     
     But admit it's an addiction and counterproductive. Lord knows I'd be more productive if someone banned me from the internet.

     @Robert_Edwardly @RupertvonRipp Plenty of hobbies can make you money. They bring a buy-in, but you can often get your money out of it if you choose wisely.

     You can’t really fall into a cool money making opportunity because of your 25,000-hour steam account. You CAN fall into a very niche job because you pick up weird skills through devotion to a physical hobby. Hell, the networking alone at IRL stuff like that can be golden.

     That’s what’s so painful about the game thing in millennials. I keep seeing the guys who just can’t let go of their youth trying to chase it over and over. They’re never gonna be fifteen again, but they’re always holding out hope they can recreate that magic with the right title. It’s not coming back. The community is gone. The magic is gone. The quality is gone. The whole industry is hollow and depressing, but they’re clinging to it like it’s a wire monkey doll.

     Instead they just have a time sink they don’t even like that much, and a life getting worse by the day while they’re parasitized into paralysis.

     Reading a book? Riding or hiking a trail? Meeting up with friends? Socializing? Kicking back with your kin? Making art? Working out? All of value. Something positive is made.
     
     Shitpoasting? A single player game at night? Dubious value. Fun but less positive.
     
     Coomerism? Drugs? MMO addiction? Negative value, your life has been made worse as have the lives of those around you.

     @RupertvonRipp @Robert_Edwardly That’s why people need to realize you aren’t just paying with money. You’re paying with TIME. And much like the other millennials, I wasted my share of it. Thankfully I had more useful diversions, but I wasted it nonetheless and now I’m playing catch-up working with dudes 5 years younger than me.

     At the very least other hobbies get you some networking. Cars put you in touch with fellow enthusiasts who’ll look out for you and offer you a job. Working on building/modifying things can land you opportunities working in that line when your skills rise above the rest. Half the guys I know into stuff like motorcycles, guns, planes, and cars tend to make out somewhere even on their crap, if not in the green.

     But there’s none of that in games, and from the sound of it they aren’t even having fun. It’s just one shit-flavored vegemite sandwich after another while they say “damn, I hope they go back to making pizza like they did 20 years ago!”

     I know I’m yelling but I really do care about you guys here. Assuming the age grouping is teen to 30’s on here this is a tremendous bugbear that’s really going unaddressed.

     I’ve now seen TWO marriages speedrun into divorce because the guy thought he could have it all and live like his single friends while being a husband and father. I had a friend whose dad was super into all those WOW nerd games in the 00’s. He’d come home and lock himself away, not interact with the kids, and do nothing but raid with his digital bro’s for hour after hour.

     Today? Divorced, never speaks with his son, and acted very shocked when he discovered the immense gulf of distance between them. I’ve got a buddy who’s 28, doing that same damn thing now. His wife begs him to play with his toddler when he comes home but he HAS to play whatever just came out, no matter what. I don’t have high hopes for him, whenever I bring it up he bristles and says he “deserves free time”

     (Sorry bucko, fathers don’t have free time. All your life is earmarked to your children, they have first dibs on that and if you’re doing your job right you’ll both look forward to spending it together)

     Knowing how to connect with the olds is very useful in general. Late career guys are often the very people who can get you in a door you'd not even know existed.

Always been more interested in art and model building and within that only really gunpla and warhammer (never liked historical stuff) back before it all went to shit. Warhammer used to have a bit of a scene here but I havent been to a GW for more than a minute to see whats there now for a decade and I have to expect the worst redditor fags populate them and LGSs now.
     Art is a fucking nexus of faggotry.
     MMOs are a second job that you don't even get paid for and I find myself actively just avoiding playing wherever I can.

If I’m ever stuck in town for a while I’ll look around, most of the time hobby shops are fun to look in on. Ones with RC planes are probably the best, those dudes have solid autist vibes and those are good contacts because they like helping out their own when they show interest in the same things

     This is what got me out of my first shitty job and into what I love doing. The scope of my hobbies was much wider than the original job requirement, sharing projects and talking shop with the people I wanted to work with gave me a lot of opportunities and helped to establish my competency in lieu of a college or technical school education.
     Also allowed me to make good friends with the boss after skills I picked up as hobbies became vital to unfucking big, expensive and unexpected problems.
