I'm convinced Bluesky's success was entirely because Mastodon didn't do (1) and (2), and while the Fediverse will still likely be the main decentralized network, once Threads federates, the process was significantly slowed and fractured.”

   When will people understand that Mastodon or any other Fediverse app will not need to ”success” and be mainstream? I think we are not driven by profit and corporate gain. I think we will exist as long as there are people running their web services.

     @rolle @kevinjardine we are working on Quote Posts right now. First step is trying to figure out the exact behavior we want for them (this raises an interesting number of questions) and then how to represent them in ActivityPub (which nobody really did formally).
     But remember that we have 1.5 developer on the Mastodon software, who need to also work on many other things, like bugfixes or security issues.
     But we are making progress, slowly.

     @rolle At least Mastodon does recommend a server now I believe?

     I don't understand why it is taking so long to implement quote posts as they are on the development list. Perhaps the Mastodon lead developers do not understand how important those are? Threads, Bluesky and X-Twitter all have them and their lack on Mastodon stands out like a sore thumb.

     And yes I do believe that Mastodon as a whole is (and should be) competing with those sites for users.

     @kevinjardine I think it's not whether it should be done, it's about motivation and the "better way" for it to be done 🤷♂️

     @renchap Quote can be represented as Object Link with relation type https://misskey-hub.net/ns#_misskey_quote, this is what Threads and some other projects started using. But yes, this part has not been specified yet.

     What issues do you foresee?

     @silverpill It defines Object Links, which might be useful to represent Quote Posts, but are not Quote posts. Our proposal will probably be based on it (and suggest some changes to it due to possible issues).
     We know Threads implemented support this way, we are in touch with Christopher. It is a temporary implementation on their side using what is currently done by some implementations.
