   Guys I can’t take it. 364 days a year you expect NOTHING of value from this dead carcass of a once-great empire.

   In the last 2 hours I’ve heard normally level headed guys consistently jump from “just shoot it with an f15 duh” to “well duh, retard, just use a laser”

   Where are these lasers with this range? Have you SEEN the installations they’ve been prototyping for 10 years? They aren’t small, or portable, they’re gigantic testbed projects that aren’t sitting there waiting to be switched on to shoot something 1,400 miles across the country

   They’re toys for the MIC to play with and make press releases about blowing up a small target drone a couple miles away - not a QRF defensive system waiting to be powered on to protect the homeland. It’s not very likely they have the range, the output, or the focus to adequately track and hit a difficult to isolate balloon at the ranges they’d have to from wherever they’re installed.

   It’s like saying “shit, flint needs water? Let’s just install a replacement desalination plant by the seaside and they’ll have water tommorrow morning!”

   You’re supposed to be more cynical than this

     @RupertvonRipp I bet it would have been handwaved away with a small press statement from the NOAA but someone jumped the gun and got the boomers riled up over it and now the media machine is excitedly playing it up for views and attention because both sides are invested in the air time

     It’s all so retarded. The air force has been pissed because the chinks wanna literally build a sprawling factory right near their north dakota base, perfectly situated for glowniggardry but no one gives a shit about that.

     But once it’s overhead they all suddenly care so much about chink spies. They don’t care enough to stop hiring chinks at General electric’s engineering department, or turn down billion-dollar factories in the midwest, but they care about shooting down a spy 20 miles away

     @sargoysmuck The super-silly part of it is that those manuals from McDonnel are probably kinda optimistic, now that we’ve gone to the airframe limit time and time again.

     I think the original was like, 15,000 hours, and they did “computer modeling” and just changed the regs to 20,000, and then when they hit THAT (flying worthless circles over the middle east) they bumped it up to 25,000 hours

     There’s only so much you can do to overhaul the frame like that.

     @CoQ_10 @sargoysmuck Out of commission for years now. Even then it’s probably not strong enough to take out a large target. A drone has very diff. thermodynamics than an multi cell envelope with inert gas

     @Heil_Honkler We have stuff, but none of it is ready at a moment’s notice, nor is it ready to be packaged up at an instant and shipped across the country. There’s no unit trained on it. Nobody keeping it maintained and ready to go the second they get the call. It’s like being called in July and told you need to have the snowblower started and warmed up in five minutes - not ready.

     I really doubt we have ANYTHING in the inventory that can take out the balloon anyways - it’s outside the use-case of every laser system you see demo’d. They care about taking out munitions, drones, and tiny stuff within the terminal phase of their flight.

     I don't think this is an option given that the laser, if it's even functional, is mounted underneath the plane and presumably can't shoot at something above it, and I'm assuming the balloon is above the ceiling of a c130.

     Right now, it’s -60º at 48,000 feet

     Not to mention wind, cooling it down even quicker

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @EssentialUtinsil @Heil_Honkler well, all you'd have to do is have a laser that can produce a temperature delta of approximately 650c at whatever distance you're looking to hit, since 570c is the AI temp of hydrogen. If these things are designed to melt drones, they already do much more than that. Hydrogen will take care of itself from a self-sustaining flame standpoint, it is after all one of the most oxygen reactive elements in existence, if there's oxygen and a flame hydrogen will combine.
