@vaartis @sampo i doubt that it has anything to do with raising user count, twitter isn't publicly traded anymore and only has something like 100 shareholders, all of them institutions or billionaires. It is probably to get people to actually pay for twitter, which is needed if they want to keep it running. Twitter has never really made any money and wasn't actually that popular, compared to facebook.

@sampo more "users" to inflate numbers for investors, more people possibly paying for subscription. Every big social media does this now (tumblr, anything Facebook related like Instagram)
