I like what @John said about #NASgate on yesterday's show. The second wave of people who joined NAS fucked up the whole thing and a little moderation is all that was needed. Makes me wonder if we couldn't boot up https://noagenda.social with mods and just some clarity that it's run by Dvorak, removing @adam from any responsibility. @eriner should have the domain. without moderation, NAS2 is just gonna be a shit show too. with moderation, it might get to federate widely. https://pca.st/episode/85c095f9-9046-410c-8f68-a6b22cb9a675?t=9405
@adam@wjmaggos@John@eriner I think it's going to be great. NA.S (I think that's what the cool kids say) is now their own place, @Darren has his own place which is cool, and the fediverse as a whole is a little bigger. I was originally of the mind that the whole thing seemed unreasonable but in retrospect it might be even better. I don't agree with the idea that NAS needed censors going around bonking wrongthinkers, but I think the outcome is a net positive for the fediverse.
@Darren@wjmaggos@John@eriner@adam tbh I have rarely visited the local timeline on any of the instances I ran or here. I follow people that make my home timeline interesting, and if they stop doing that I drop them
@thatguyoverthere@adam@wjmaggos@John@eriner The biggest change is now you have to follow everyone and not rely on the "I'll see them on the instance feed." But, it's a small price to pay.
@wjmaggos@eriner@John@Darren@adam you realize most of the reason people do stuff like that is because it gets a reaction right? People make themselves way to easy to troll sometimes. It's easy enough to mute and move on if something really gets under your skin. Maybe the reason I think this way is because my first interactions with the fediverse were as an admin of my own instance[s]. I am of the mind that users have all the controls they need to curate the content of their feeds to their liking. It is on admins and mods to help people find those tools and learn how to use them I suppose, but I would rather have control of what I see personally and I don't understand the idea of NOT having that while also often complaining about x (formerly known as birdsite) at the same time. Also, blocking is done for much more trivial things. Like adam pointed out even just NOT blocking the servers on a list someone else came up with can get you blocked which is kind of beyond censorship really. Fediblock has become an opinion filter and nothing more.
cause you're on dark fedi. you're fine with people jumping into other people's convos to say die nword (or at least won't moderate for that). most are not. it's reasonable to not want to federate with servers that have users that will do that to their users, given the chance. but what Adam says about there being too much censorship is also true. we need a middle ground (free speech but no assholes) and I dream of NAS3 I guess making that case.
@wjmaggos Who the hell is saying that? Honestly, tag me next time. I just need to actually see it.
And the midwit-verse is retarded compared to the 'dark-fedi' I went there today and cause an uproar for asking someone to define fascism. We need more dark-fedi instances.
I think the cultural ship sailed a long time ago for making NAS something @adam and @John would find brand-acceptable. The blessing and curse of internet social sites regardless of the format is that the only two options are “squash wrongposting” and “people post what they actual think”. I cannot imagine what possible other outcome they could have expected from an audience of a podcast that makes questioning the official narrative its entire raison d’etre. You’re going to get everything from “Big Pharma is evil” to “Hitler did nothing wrong” with that audience. To expect them to to only question the “right” things is silly.
Relying on the instance feed is always retarded. If you don’t want to curate your experience yourself, you’re just asking for stress and frustration at some point if not immediately. The NA community is no different from others in that respect.
@wjmaggos@eriner@John@Darren@adam I hope people don't think blocking actually prevents people from popping around it easily enough to see what they are saying. That'd be silly. Expecting to live in a world where nothing offensive ever occurs is also kind of silly. I don't know I think people take socials way too seriously sometimes.
> unable to consider the experience of others
I'm saying that their experience is personally customizable to their tastes. I don't know how that's not considering their experience.
> servers full of harassers
There is no reason for spinster to be as hated as they are. For a while (perhas still) they were one of the most blocked instances around. You can't even use certain software to log in to spinster because they are so bad apparently.
Also bear in mind I am saying I think the move is ultimately a net win for everyone (including the show). I also never saw the NAS public timeline because I'm not an NAS user. Like I mentioned further up I follow people that make my timeline interesting and don't follow people who annoy me. I don't accept every opinion of every person I follow (Amerika would send me to africa) but when you don't react like a fool to silly trolls you can have interesting conversations with people you disagree with.
all the people who say just mute them are basically anonymous, don't post anything personal or take lefty stances. Adam has no choice but to be public. He doesn't want to hide. So he got tired of this shit. Imagine if he wasn't becoming religious but transitioning. You guys all seem to be unable to consider the experiences of others. I'm against too much fediblocking but servers that federate with servers full of harassers will not be popular.
@Hyolobrika@wjmaggos@John@eriner@Darren@adam I don't use it often enough to say one way or another I guess, but when I've used it things quieted down, or at least so it seemed.
>It's easy enough to mute and move on if something really gets under your skin It's not though. Muting is really buggy, at least on Soapbox. People's posts still show up if you go to the thread they're in.
@Hyolobrika@Darren@John@adam@eriner@wjmaggos I also get the impression that most of the instances quick to block whole servers are running mastodon not pleroma or soapbox which are considered racist or bigot software or something.
>we need a middle ground (free speech but no assholes) But "no assholes" is a restriction on speech. So what does "free speech" mean in that case? I think the solution is the fact-value gap: all "is" beliefs are allowed but morals (or lack thereof) and aesthetics are moderated.
Also known as fascism. The fasces was a strong weapon compared to it's weak constituant twigs. Ironically this is also where the word faggot seems to come from.
humans get power by working together. to define your group by something you can choose to be part of or not, is quite different than one assigned at birth. it's still not great when you're creating an other, but lefty approaches do tend to allow groups like owners to give up their wealth and join the worker movement. and I'm a big believer in liberal democracy, not these systems that tend toward tyranny.
What would the world look like if we didn’t have first world problems of epic proportions like this one? How boring would it be? John couldn’t block no one Adam couldn’t complain about PNS memes, Phoneboy would not have a freakout, Eriner could finally chop wood again…. ….oh boy would life be boring AF.
And at the end of the day any of our devices has a on/off switch.
