LS (lain@lain.com)'s status on Sunday, 21-Jan-2024 04:39:41 JST LS What’s a good way to remote help someone on a windows pc from a Mac? My parents sent me a screenshot that makes me think that they have some weird ad-pushing extension installed. -

Bunni (cosplaying as Zelda) (bunni@raru.re)'s status on Sunday, 21-Jan-2024 05:06:26 JST Bunni (cosplaying as Zelda) @lain I looked it up in more details, there's easier than vnc apparently, with RDP
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-use-remote-desktop-5fe128d5-8fb1-7a23-3b8a-41e636865e8c from windows (seems easy to set up)
And then on mac you should be able to find a RDP client, idk if there's good/bad onesOnly thing I'm not sure is if the server needs to open ports to allow access (I think for vnc they do need it)
It would make it much less accessibleLS likes this. -

If you don't want to open ports (which I assume), then either go with something simple like chrome remote desktop ( https://remotedesktop.google.com/ ) or apparently there's a FLOSS self-hosted alternative to teamviewer called rustdeck ( https://rustdesk.com/ )
I think going with chrome would be the easiest

NonPlayableClown (nonplayableclown@postnstuffds.lol)'s status on Sunday, 21-Jan-2024 05:28:40 JST NonPlayableClown You can get Microsoft remote desktop from on the Apple store.
Though ultra vnc can do the job too, setup is a pain in the ass though.
If you can instruct them (since this is your parents, probably not) any app with screenshare helps. In conversation permalink LS likes this.
