   Oh no, a new eruption started at 7:57 UTC today in the Grindavík area in Iceland.

   Things had been relatively quiet since the previous eruption on Dec 18, 2023.

   This follows an intense series of earthquakes at the Sundhnúksgígar crater row that began around 03:00 UTC.

   The map below shows the approx. location of the new fissure, whose southern edge is about 1 km from Grindavík.

   The 2nd map shows the approx. location of the underground magma dyke from last month.

     These aerial images posted by the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management show the ferocity of the eruption and its closeness to the town of Grindavík in the Reykjanes peninsula of Iceland.

     The town of Grindavík has been evacuated.

     The greenhouse in the 3rd image below is in imminent danger.

     Here is a map of recent earthquakes in the Reykjanes region of Iceland and a graph showing the timeline and intensity of each earthquake.

     There was an intense burst of earthquake activity from 03:00 to 08:00 UTC. The rate and intensity has subsided since then.

     Here is another graphical representation of the earthquake activity in the Reykjanes region of Iceland, showing the number of earthquakes per hour grouped by intensity level ranges.

     There was an intense burst of earthquake activity from 03:00 to 08:00 UTC. The rate and intensity has subsided since then.

     A new fissure has opened up just 50-100 m from the houses along the northern edge of Grindavík.

     In the map, defensive walls are marked in yellow. The extent of the lava flow is shown in black. The lava flow has been constrained to a large extent by the east-west wall.

     One of the unoccupied houses has fallen prey to the lava. We can see the new lava flow, which is now encroaching into the first row of houses in north Grindavík, in the webcam screen-capture below.

     Here is a link to one of the webcam live-streams by RÚV, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service.

     The camera is located north of Grindavik and shows the new fissure and its lava flow entering the town of Grindavik.

     This is tragic news for the residents of Grindavik, but this the nature of the geology of the region.

     This screen-cap from the webcam at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvcP4kVVOnk looking SW shows the lava flowing left to right along the defensive wall just north of the greenhouse visible on the left of the image. The lava flow is crossing the north-south main road, so that route is now cut-off to traffic.

     The new fissure and its lava encroaching into the town of Grindavik can be seen in the distance.

     Horrible situation.
