   I really like that the main image-manipulation library for python is one that's been maintained for 1995, which means it has more backwards compatibility than python

   but it also means that THEY WILL NEVER FIX THE MAJOR OVERSIGHTS THAT MAKE IT A PAIN TO USE

     I'm pretty sure the palette support in PIL(low) has been marked experimental since before y2k

     my palette manipulation code wasn't working, so I took it out and had it just take the input image, replace the palette with itself, and save the image

     the images are coming out in greyscale

     im=Image.open('in.png')
     im.palette=ImagePalette.ImagePalette(im.palette.mode,im.palette.palette)
     im.save('out.png')

     load the image:
     create a new palette using the same mode and the same raw palette data, then assign that palette to the image's palette.
     save it.

     this should change NOTHING.

     but the image is now black & white

     from PIL import Image,ImagePalette

     im=Image.open('in.png')
     im.putpalette(im.getpalette())
     im.save('out.png')

     apparently there's some magic that assigning to im.palette does or doesn't do that putpalette doesn't do or does do

     @lewiscowles1986 basically yeah. I'm manipulating some images that did palette tricks, so I need to not destroy their palette order

     Yeah I couldn't precisely preserve palette like this so I use convert to 'RGBA' and then again to what I want. It may produce a new palette. I am unsure if they are deterministic.

     Are you trying to do some clever 1980's tricks with the palette?
