   The proper response to “let us get married” would have been:
   Sure, in fact let’s get government completely out of marriage altogether and let private individuals enter into whatever contracts they wish.

   Instead it just allowed them into an already consolidated power structure.

   The derivative of the slippery slope is always the centralized power that exists to be captured.

     Marriage properly understood is the incubator of new life, and thus as an institution it is of paramount importance to both state and society, and should be regulated accordingly. The idea of government "neutrality" on an issue of such paramount importance is an absurd one. The idea that all public institutions must be value neutral arose in the 1950s, and the social fabric of the nation has only decayed and unraveled since. Marriage is and can only be between a man and a woman, and only a society that affirms that in all its legal and cultural institutions can hope to stand, not one that hides behind a feeble veil of "neutrality."

     It all started in the 1820s when democrats created marriage licenses because they wanted to prevent miscegenation. They made marriage a state institution, and look where we are now.

     As a gay (but not a contemporary retard like many of my peers), I fully support civil unions for all, gay and straight. Making marriage a government institution was a mistake, but if we can't undo it now, we can at least make it more neutral.

     A contract between a man and a woman to have and raise children is sacred and of the utmost importance. The government getting involved fucked up the word "marriage" and now the word is next to meaningless because of their involvement. The government has become far too large if me living with a dude is any of their business, but if it is going to be their business, they're going to treat me the same as all other taxable households.
