OwlThreads is testing federation for a few selected profiles. I assume they also have some kind of whitelist of instances or software, because out of the 8 instances i have accounts on, federation with threads only works on lorsh/mastodon. Or maybe it's just buggy at the moment.
It's still a huge step forward. Now if you have a normie friend who whines about elon's bad decisions but says fedi is too complicated when you suggest it as an alternative, IT'S YOUR DUTY to call them a lazy retard 🙂
@lonelyowl this is a tremendous milestone. I think they're federating with the big Mastodon instances who had talks with the Meta team for now so we could expect the fedi walled garden to federate them anytime in 2024. This new incursion from Big Tech to the free internet looks very similar to the XMPP fall a few decades ago and we're in the front seat to watch. Also, NPCs will NPC so don't give them much hope.
It is now federated with lorsh and aipub, both relatively small. However, this account seems to be unreachable from any non-mastodon instances, i assume this is a temporary technical limitation.
I prefer to be neither very optimistic nor pessimistic about it, if this will shift normietards towards free and decentralized web - great, if not - we lose nothing 🤷♀️
@Zerglingman@SunMcNukes@lonelyowl so does email, unlike XMPP, email is actually used and has federation. And comparing things to email is extremely low bar.
@Zerglingman@lonelyowl luckily for us XMPP is rock solid but there was an attempt to kill it long time ago when Google Talk and WhatsApp decided to adopt it, grab all the normies and defederate by changing the protocol and closing it to the public. I'm not an oracle and Meta may or may not repeat those "divide and conquer" tactics, I just had flashbacks.
@SunMcNukes@lonelyowl Oh it's almost certain they will. But we can just continue ignoring them. If the mastodongs decide they really must continue to federate with the other NPCs and in doing so breaks themselves off from us, that sounds like a net positive to me. (Also don't forget Facebook was involved in the XMPP EEE.)
@burner@SunMcNukes@lonelyowl@douse_niggers_in_gasoline_and_light_them_up ? Skill issue? I run my own mail server. It actually can't reach gmail right this minute because I have been very lazy about getting the PTR moved after losing my old domain, but that's the only thing they've ever rejected me for. sjw's mail server is also fine, and some of his domains are benign enough.
@burner@SunMcNukes@Zerglingman@lonelyowl file for bankruptcy if your company can't afford 8 bucks for a domain name that's already a requirement for hosting your own email servers, ignoring hundreds of thousands in hardware required for servers itselves when you're in "professional" field.
? we can afford it, it's just that it sucks that you're basically locked to big providers. Though from what @Zerglingman said, I may be incorrect about that.
@caekislove@Zerglingman@lonelyowl just like Google Talk held the vast majority of users before defederation. Instagram should surpass the fedi user base by large.
@burner@SunMcNukes@Zerglingman@lonelyowl You literally only require a domain name and port 25 open, you can run an email server at home, and if you're the only user of your email, literally any hardware from past 2 decades will be able to deal with receiving and sending email.
@SunMcNukes@Zerglingman@lonelyowl For some reason "exactly like instagram, but with less pictures and videos" wasn't a compelling product for instagram's current userbase 😂
@burner@SunMcNukes@Zerglingman@lonelyowl Despite what you see on internet, google isn't evil enough to go out of their way to block email not coming from google.
@douse_niggers_in_gasoline_and_light_them_up@Zerglingman@lonelyowl non sequitur. XMPP has OTR and OMEMO and SMTP basically lets your assigned alphabet agent correct your grammar. Yes, both fedi and XMPP honeypots exist but their weakness don't reside in protocol issues.
