     The simple explanation for this is that they have no problem seeing people suffer daily. A normal person see this and it hurts them. This is part of why panhandling was made illegal in times past - because it is an intentional abuse of this.

     @sickburnbro It's not Christian to give a $20 to a homeless bum, it's Christian to help him get clean and get back on his feet. By and large the homeless people willing to accept this sort of help do in fact get it. Panhandlers don't want actual help, they want to leech off society while continuing their destructive ways.

     But yes, I know lots of older ladies that carry cards for shelters that they will give to homeless.

     @sickburnbro @ArdainianRight You know, now I think about it, there are very few examples of genuine homelessness in the Bible due to how society supported their own. The Nomad patriarchs and various smaller nomadic tribes cannot be considered "homeless" by modern definitions and would not have considered themselves as such either. There's implied homelessness, especially lepers from their unique and extreme case, but even they had like leper colonies supported by the Hebrew state, tribes, and extended family structures. Even disabled and destitute people like some of the blind or lame healed by Christ were supported by families and friends and OT people who lost homes from mortgages were defended by Nehemiah's government and quickly reestablished to their ancestral homes within a month or two.
     
     The modern Western economy structure and philosophies, both capitalistic and socialistic, have destroyed that traditional set-up and have made us insane thinking we with our millions homeless is completely sane and normal or somehow better than the ancients and medievals.

     @sickburnbro @ArdainianRight I suppose the bigger point is that God's commands related to the poor throughout Scripture are explicitly or implicitly kin-centric and He is not expecting you to go head over heels after strangers for poverty welfare first or foremost to show "Christian love", however good and bonus that is if you can manage that while helping family, kin, and nation first and foremost.
