     the previous time was with a printer that was "supported on linux, by CUPS!"

     by which they meant "you can install our driver, which includes a closed-source pre-processing program, and we ship it for both CPU architectures, x86-32 and x86-64

     @edmonds so the fun thing is that they basically do do that. Their printer speaks IPP just fine, in theory

     in reality, it has a network stack so shitty that it keeps falling off the network because... no reason.

     so I figured "hey I can just stick cups on a raspi and network it that way, right?"

     NOPE! x86 only!

     @foone they should put a li'l CPU running linux and CUPS and their proprietary CUPS filter binary inside the printer and then your CUPS server outside the printer can speak IPP etc. to the CUPS server inside the printer

     @foone @swelljoe ugh I cannot find this now, but there is an alternate telling of this story which makes it clear that Stallman was just being petty about nobody at the AI lab liking him, and the thing with the printer was overblown and inaccurate. When I read it I assumed it'd be linked up on Wikipedia and similar places but it seems to have been lost to time
