wat? Matrix protocol supports e2ee and I'm pretty sure element enables it by default when creating a new room - at least when the room is a DM. You can also enable e2ee on any room after it's been created (you can't disable encryption though). You can also run your own server if you are uncomfortable with the storage policies of existing servers.-

It's not end 2 end encrypted, so it's not my first choice. Also, I don't know what the storage policies are on any given infrastructure, or who owns what.
Signal is open source too, but have been very open about their infrastructure, and they don't have access to your data.
