   the glowforge is a great tool. it always works the same way:
   you carefully design your thing, you enter all the parameters for laser intensity, number of passes, and material width, then hit GO and it fails to do it properly

     and the best part is that between every attempt, you have to go back and forth between the computer and the big laser box, which in my case is barely in the same building

     max power level: fails to cut all the way through the very thin wood
     max power level, half speed: cuts so hard that it snaps in two because it's too burnt

     gotta slowly binary-search the correct power level while it takes 5 minutes for each iteration and a couple dollars of materials

     I do want to use it for a floppy experiment: I want to try and laser a hole in the disc.
     Then I'll go back and reformat the disk (using a flux imager) so that the hole ends up in the middle of a sector.
     So then the sector will have random data when you read it, because there's no material there

     the other fun thing about Glowforge is that it saves your material settings (like laser speed/power/focusing) per-object, so when you're iterating by adjusting an external SVG, every time you re-import the new copy, it resets everything to defaults and you have to re-enter all your settings

     @foone You can achieve the same effect just writing lots of disk-level 0's (not data 0's which will be MFM or FM encoded to not be 0's on the disk) - aka Weak Bits.

     @damieng the trick with the laser hole is that you can't re-write it. with weakbits, if you overwrite the sector, it becomes a normal sector.
     with a hole, it's always holey.

     It also doesn't help that I definitely know there's a speed/density/power level that'll set this wood on fire, and I have to resist the temptation to find out what settings that is

     apparently the difference between 300... generic speed units? and 250 is that 300 barely cuts out the wood and 250 nearly sets it on fire

     do I try 275 or just put up with 250 leaving my projects covered in charcoal?

     it has been [0] days since I nearly tried to cut a magnet in half

     (you use magnets to hold the wood down to the cutting surface, since the plywood I'm using is rarely perfectly flat, and the curving would cause problems, especially if it shifted during a cut)

     the stabilizing crossbar is on the underside of the trusses. why? I don't know. there's room on the top. it would make more sense on the top, as gravity AND friction would keep it in place, instead of just friction

     it took all of 20 seconds to adjust this design so that it was gravity-compatible and can now be safely used on earth.
     why didn't I do this before I'd made like 4 prototype cuts?

     @ckape the trick is to cut it in half without heating it up. if you get near the curie temperature, it demagnetizes, but if you can cut it in half without heating it up, you can separate a dipole magnet into two monopoles

     @Nekoplanet yeah. glowforge doesn't work that way: you control it through their website, and they do support profiles... as in, the profiles of the materials they'll sell you.

     everything else is manual, because they really want you to buy materials from them

     @foone IDK about the glowforge specifically but usually whenever I get a new material what I do on lightburn is print a series of calibration patterns I have to determine what speed is good to cut, engrave, etc... and save them as profiles :&
