Have you heard of Alt+backspace ? Basically by hitting Esc you are triggering Alt (or Emacs lingo "meta"):
> You can also type Meta characters using two-character sequences starting with ESC. Thus, you can enter M-a by typing ESC a.[1]
So you Esc and then backspace is a workaround for Alt+backspace, plus Alt is much more reachable.
