  @dushman @7666 @julia mumble does more than voip in the worst way possible, the protocol is pretty decent but for basically anything other than the voice transmission itself its super janky
  i think discord is trash, i think teamspeak is trash, they're user friendly and mumble isnt a replacement in the slightest, especially for discord, which does far more than mumble or mumble+irc will ever do in a convenient package. it's the network effect for sure, but also because people dont "only vc" on there. they're social platforms, your recommendation of mumble as a replacement makes no sense because it only replaces one tiny part of it, more jank, and most people aren't going to host servers or know someone who does.
  but sure yes it is good at specifically just low latency encrypted audio transmission

  @allison @7666 @dushman @julia i mentally classify it as its own category, a social chat application. the closest thing i see to competition here is telegram but they do a lot of things different as to not directly compete so much. there's no real open source competition, hell, theres not much real competition in general outside of shitty clones. i suppose in open source element/matrix exists but it is so fucking bad holy shit. still manages to attract the less discord friendly communities though fine.
  that's been my on and off project forever, but i have so many motivation issues and executive dysfunction i never even get the basics layed out. i quit discord a while back and only rejoined recently and i barely use it, but honestly this type of application is my favorite social format, fedi is okay but theres something about a social network like things in groupchats, it's so cozy its the perfect fit for my bpd brain
