   Retired US Marine Michael Winter, found among the prisoners captured in Soledar, participated in US military operations in Syria, Iraq, Libya, etc.
   
   He claims he was there instructing Ukrainian troops.

     @Terry Kinda funny how they need a US marine to train when they’ve had a simmering conflict a short drive away from their home town for a full decade.

     Not really sure he brought THAT much to the table, except for the name-brand USMC experience under his belt. The more I see of the conflict, the less applicable the american way of fighting seems to be for the ukes.

     Those guys spent more time as an occupational police force with insane overmatch than actual soldiers, the guys doing the hiking and fighting are in their late 40’s now if they deployed in the first phase of GWOT

     @Terry (I’m riffing, in case anyone here gets grumpy about their experience. It’s just funny to imagine getting lessons from a dude who probably had considerable air cover, armored support, and vehicles to pack his shit through most of his fighting when you’re a ukrainian dude who’s been fighting in the east for years without any of those luxuries.)

     “Uh….sir? what do we do if we don’t have aircraft on standby?”

     “well, then you’ll call one of the tanks and have them level the building you were taking fire from”

     “…….but what if we don’t have tanks?”

     “oh, yeah sometimes they’re in maintenance. In that case, have one of the strikers, or bradleys, or even a humvee with a mark 40 light it up. See? Urban combat is simple!”

     “uh…….what if we have to take the building ourselves?”

     “ah, that’s uh…..well I guess in 03 we used to hit the door and throw a rock inside so they’d all hunker down thinking it was a flashbang, that usually works. Make sure you bring small 6 inch zip ties so you can flexcuff the kids, it’s a pain when they start running around screaming and someone shoots them thinking the kid’s running for his dad’s gun”

     “….okay. Thanks. That’s uh……good to know against the russians. I don’t think we’re gonna be confiscating weapons caches from family homes though”
