   I have a very hard time being nice to my boys IRL when I see this shit. If you have a wife, then you have to stop pretending you can live like all your buttfuck-single friends. Nothing looks more selfish to the rest of the fam than you cloistering yourself in the den for a 3-day vidya binge all alone, totally avoiding them until it’s time to drag your ass to work again.

   You’re a man and a husband, you have better uses for your very limited free time than staring at a box and playing globohomo simulator 38. Nobody likes to hear it, but it’s life. You can’t be seventeen forever, and you’re a fool if you try to live the same perma-teen lifestyle the average guy does into his late 20’s.

   Even more nasty to see it in a father. The “cool dads” into gaming that I saw growing up mostly divorced, not just because of the games, but it’s a measure of how self-centered and blind to their family they were. It shows where your priorities lie.

   If you want to play video games, you’d better be playing them with family so that you’re spending some kind of time bonding and being an influence in your kids’ lives. Playing alone is nasty. Every time friends get this talk they get pissy with me instead of just being honest with themselves and realizing they’re indulging in a vice and wasting their time. Once you realize the time you’re wasting, you can start to take measures to overcome it.

   But if you refuse and cope about how it’s totally cool and fine to be a 26 yo husband spending his time the exact same way he did at 14….well bud your marriage is taking some lumps you’ll have to watch out for.

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @TheVeryLutheranHousewife Correct. Don't waste time, kids don't stay kids forever and the bitter memory of a distant and childish father is easily remedied with fond memories of an engaged and loving father merely by doing the "fun" stuff with kids in mind.
     
     You'll enjoy an evening at the park more than an evening in your masturbatorium as well I promise.

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @TheVeryLutheranHousewife Yeah, I know a dude who I quit hanging out with because he’d ignore his wife and kid to play World of Warcraft. I’d come over to hang out, and he’d just basically go “Entertain my wife and kid for me, bro.”

     His wife ended up divorcing his ass after I got her one of those stupid magic crystals that was supposed to “cause healing and calmness” for his wife who was 8 months pregnant because she believed in that crystal bullshit. While she was giving birth, he decided that it was more important to raid. She realized that, and I quote, “My husband’s friend who bought me this crystal for 3 bucks because he knew it’d bring me peace of mind even though he thinks it’s bullshit was more there for me than me than my husband was.”

     @Codeki @TheVeryLutheranHousewife Yeah….and I see way too much of this. I probably sound like the old man in the room when I see my married young family, in particular, because I won’t ever stop guilting them. To this day I have one I keep teasing because he canceled plans with his wife to play Dark Souls II.

     “Hey how’re doing in dark souls? Still playing it every day? No? But you’re still married to your wife…..huh. Still playin’ Elden Ring? No? But you spend 3 months playing it nonstop….what’s the point if you quit already? All that time and……?“

     Boys need to understand that your friends won’t be around for long after school. It’s the same shit I hear from dumb parents refusing to take discord from their kids: “It’s not just the games though! It’s how they hang out with each other!”

     Nobody knows how to maintain a friendship anymore, you’ll invariably go your separate ways and become strangers once again. Every hour you’re blowing playing something online is taken away from invaluable, irreplaceable time fortifying your family for the days to come. (If you want real lasting friends, you have a better shot rooting your activities in IRL stuff)

     I live in an extremely left-state and the closest friend I have that shares in any of my hobbies or beliefs lives four hours away by car, next closest is 12. I can't even fathom how I would find other people like me without the internet. Just start showing up to tabletop stores and going "hey are you into both TTRPGS and also fascist mysticism"?
     I'm not saying that you should try to relive your teenage years forever but in an era where total alienation is the complete norm for basically everyone, it's hard to look for belonging without the online. It is true that nothing lasts forever, though.

     @NoRefunds @Codeki @TheVeryLutheranHousewife You can have online strangers for friends, but make sure you put your family first, they’re gonna be in your life forever. When I have time for internet hangouts, I’ll choose my actual brothers, my sister, or my parents over anyone else, it means a lot more to them.

     (And IDC if your family sucks, you should be smart enough to determine which relationships merit the most time in your own life, every time this comes up people start telling me about how their family doesn’t deserve it like they need me to provide an exemption to them for estranging from family)
