They have mecha kits, guns, tanks, etc and that plays better than boring star wars/harry potter legos.

I'm leaning towards transformers but there's so many to choose from and they range from completely lame to collectors edition rip offs. I figured something geared towards 7-10 year olds would be good for them if I go "Lego" because they'll feel challenged by it, but I'm clueless on transformers. -

Some are poorly parented retards, so you can’t buy them nice things sans loss/breakage. Better stock kids can get nice things and take care of them, all really depends. I don’t start really going for sentimentality until they’re around 10 or so, then I usually opt for useful dude stuff like tiny flashlights, watches, etc

A little $20 brass light is fun, the heft helps them not lose it as easily (or leave it by their bedside)
