This video of a Gen Z girl complaining has gone viral, but I get her point.
When I graduated only 8yrs ago, I had a similar schedule: wake up 7am, commute, work until 6pm, go to gym/home/sleep. It was a busy daily schedule, and even on the weekends I was studying for my CFA to better my career
The difference then was that I was being paid, at the time, good competitive salary to sacrifice so much.
9 - 5 workers now make shit wages for such sacrifice to their social lives, so what's the point?

@NBS when I worked at the factory during summers in college we were doing 12 hour days M-F and 10 on Saturdays. so get up at 4:30 and chug a coffee and eat a hotpocket then get to the factory and work 6-6 with a paid half hour lunch, go home, pass out in bathtub, eat, pass out on couch, go to bed. Repeat. But yeah 9-5 is pretty rough too I guess 😅

@mh Oh yeah, that was my other thought. She was mostly complaining that she had no time for “life” during the work week, assuming she means M-F. Hey, kid, there’s this thing called a “weekend”? That’s when you rest and have fun and do “life” stuff - you get two whole days for it!

At the time, I was sacrificing social life on the week nights and weekends to better my career and earn a good salary relative to my peers
Now these similar demands are in place but you earn dogshit for pay. Why work a 9-5 job, plus a 1hr commute give-or-take for wages similar to what minimum wage earners earn now given our high inflation word?
Fast food workers now earn ~$15 - $20 an hour now. My first job just 8yrs ago in Big 4 accounting earned ~$30 an hour, and still does... and for what?

The light at the end of that tunnel isn’t found in most jobs these days. None of my jobs prior to making the leap into an actual good position were anything except the building blocks in what turned out to be a very lucky opportunity

@NBS I get what you’re saying to an extent, but I worked an 8-5 job right out of school, for $16k in 1995 - that’s not much money even back then. But I knew it was work that I enjoyed, and if I worked hard and proved myself, eventually I would be making what I deserved. And within 5 years, I was.
I never begrudged the grind - I knew it was temporary and that I would be recognized for the work I was doing. I also knew I could move on if the company turned out to be crappy.

That makes sense but my point is about comparative wages. I’m making a big assumption about her pay but I’d imagine her frustrations stem from the fact that the minimum wage now is so high (due to inflation)
Enduring low pay now for a future higher pay is totally reasonable and should be expected, to your point. But when that low pay is only 10% - 15% more than bare minimum wage (with no education requirement) at the expense of 10s of thousands in college debt, what’s the point?

@NBS Yeah, the college debt thing does seem to be a much bigger problem now than when I was in school. I’m shocked at how much college costs have gone up compared to wages. I don’t know what our kids are going to do - maybe heating and air?
