Like if I were to create a dual boot setup would my apps and stuff show up on Linux?-

installed on windows then I boot up Linux
Would those still show up there and work? -

Hardware configuration programs, those won't work.
I have a Razer mouse and there are Linux native programs to configure it (I use polychromatic).
>Discord
Has it's own native Linux version. I don't know if it would work in wine.(the windows translation layer program).
>Spotify
In the Arch repos has it's own native version, I don't know if you can still use it with wine.
Some programs just have Linux native versions, so I don't know if the wine devs have bothered with them.Meemoo likes this. -

You can run most games through a piece of software called “wine” (my experience is indie-games biased, i don’t play AAA, but GuildWars and WoW worked for me for example). Steam has a “hidden” wine built in and there should be some help on the forums if it doesn’t work out of the box.
Software should work through wine (i’ve used vocaloid synthesizer throug it for example), although you probably should use native alternatives . It doesn’t “show up” on linux, you need to install “wine” through the package manager of your distribution and run
wine /path/to/file.exeor create a shortcut to that command in your menu, on desktop or wherever you find convenient.

I still have a windows partition in another disk. Because, very rarely, there is some software, usually related to hardware configuration, that it's only on Windows, the two times I had to use it:
1 To disable a the RBG lights of my graphics card.
2 Updating my xbox controler firmware, only possible from a program in the windows store (I don't know if this has changed).
Edit: mind you I didn't have a windows partition for like year after started using Linux, but then I had these issues.Meemoo likes this. -

kamehamic (kamehamic@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 21-Oct-2023 07:56:41 JST kamehamic @draw @Meemoo Using Wine alone is a bit of unnecessary, specially for new users that don't know how it works, best it to let steam handle it (proton is steam wine's flavor used behind the scenes), and if it isn't a steam game use something like lutris (being brief, some sort of Wizard program that uses wine and other software and allows to create profiles per game/software).
Using wine alone is good "to learn" how it works, it's important to learn a least about prefixes (prefix is the folder "windows instance" being used, it's better to keep them split, but if KNOW WHAT ARE YOU DOING you can put software together).Meemoo likes this. -

It used to be that i needed to install this or that library or tinker with forced desktop mode or the windows version in the config, which i don't know if you have reasonable access through steam). That's just Gnome doing Gnome things. Install a diiferent DE and you'll have a much better time. That being said, don't start on Debian unless you're ready to deal with Free Software driver autism. Stick with Mint or Pop, install the nonfree drivers, and you'll have a much simpler switchover. -

draw (draw@varishangout.net)'s status on Saturday, 21-Oct-2023 08:37:24 JST draw @Meemoo I've always had a bad time finding solutions for my issues with debian. I feel like the debian/ubuntu community on the internet is often clueless and just throws random things at the problems in hope it goes away, documentation is either outdated or not that helpful. I love the Arch wiki. On the other hand i don't feel confident recommending the Arch, since it being a bleeding-edge rolling distro can eventually cause problems. Haven't had it happen to me yet in my one year of use, but it's probably bound to happen eventually. On the one hand finding debs of software should be easier than for other distros - on the other AUR is really nice. -

Tho it all depends, on my personal opinion using s debian stable base for gaming is very much a connundrum and some of an oxymoron but something like arch is not the solution either, for a gaming distro you need something that provides some stability to libraries (arch can't, too bleeding edge for production), but still provides new versions of libraries in spans of less than 2 years, that is incidentally the spot where "slower" rolling distros and "faster" versioned distros shine, stuff like popOS, Solus and even Void Linux fit that niche perfectly.
Tho there are other ways to achieve a similar result, one of them is to use debian based distros on their unstable branch as that will move at a similar speed to void linux, or to slow down arch's package updaaaaaating madness which is what manjaro fails to do BUT steam managed to nail perfectly on the deck. -

I've been meaning to fiddle with arch on a USb stick but just haven't made the time. Too many games to play -

You guys are all mint for a first distro. I started with arch 10 months ago as my first distro and I did a install using the manual and not the install script. So far the worst thing thats happened is KDE crashing mid mkinitipio leading to an unbootable system post restart. I am using a used t480 thinkpad as my daily driver right now since my desktops been dead for 10 months.
Though in all honestly it was a pretty interesting learning experience as I banged my head against the wall trying to figure out how to setup btrfs/dual boot using 1 ssd and making sure that windows isn't going to gut grub over it. -
Noraweed (noraweed@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 21-Oct-2023 11:20:31 JST Noraweed @Kyonko802 @kamehamic @Meemoo @Spooke @draw I once borked a Mint install (fucked with my glibc versioning), said fuck that to fixing it and just shrunk the partition and installed manjaro on the partition I made out of the newly freed space. I used that laptop like that for years.
Since then I've learned the glory of snapshots and rollbacks using btrfs or timeshift.Kyonko802 likes this.
