You can pop into any Discord server and it will be a very sanitized place. No characters, chat retards, or organic discussion topics (no HRT usage and current political thing do not count). It's a sanitized social experience, with anything interesting that could possibly exist stripped out and replaced with pronoun havers acting like braindamaged zoomers straight out of Roblox.
The person who posted this in a chat even asked the question, "What do people even talk about?"
This, this is why the fediverse will succeed. The other places online have taken away the ability to be yourself without being forced into a mold by the jannies. most normal discord.jpg photo_2023-10-18_22-53-55.jpg
@irie@lauralt The reason drama happens so much on Discord IMO is due to the "forum moderator" or "imageboard janny" problem: aside from central Discord moderation sucking up to anything approved by Blackrock (what did you expect from a San Fran tech company honestly), Discord servers give midwits who work at McDonald's or live in mom's basement the illusion of power.
Gone are the days of having to get your friends to sign up for your Top Gamer 420 forum on proboards/freeforums/similar or having to set up phpBB or some shitty nulled vbulletin crack full of exploits, instead you just need to spin up a Discord "server". There's also the exclusivity aspect since peasants with a web browser can't view it, which infamously has affected sites like ResetEra and NeoGAF before this, early BlueSky, and SomethingAwful.
As a result, Discord tends to attract the bottom feeder garbage who can now feel like kings. This includes skid groups (see the Telegram/Discord "CCP" group that zoombombed Yung Thug's trial or the current spam wave), skids who also use Discord groups as a C&C server (there have been pieces of malware documented to do just this multiple times), the very real "Discord Trannies" who groom/wage gayops and adjacent groups, power tripping software developers, and more.
This is on top of dark patterns like completely erasing chat history and the idea of you even being in the server if you are kicked/banned from a server, and people online not being well behaved whatsoever. Peace on a Discord server is reliant on a trigger word not being said to turn the server into a seethefest. average discord dev.webp
Still, the software and a lot of the moderators here are not incentivizing such behavior in order to atomize people. Disagreement, even heated, is not a bad thing for a community. It just proves that those things that bring the community together are much stronger that those things pulling it apart.
@Pawlicker While true let's not forget that these forces of conformity, capped thinking, and violence towards those who deviate exist everywhere even here. It's fallen human nature. Discord as part of globohomo simply specialized in a certain flavor of it.
