The only reason we haven’t had all sorts of crashes so far is what the old timers call ‘big sky theory‘, there’s enough room in 3 dimensions that everyone’s got a giant buffer

It IS really tough, I only happened to luckily spy a growing dot in the distance when we almost had a head-on in my early career. Uncontrolled field and an old man flying NORDO upwind into the downwind leg is a great recipe.
I was the junior kid at the time and the cap spun us when he broke and overcorrected
