   I kinda see the point. It’s like seeing a possible infiltrator using outdated, incorrect equipment.

Still could be a bot, but having seen the number of “hey kids, here’s how YOU can help the _ effort!” assignments over the years, I can’t rule it out when someone appears out of place.      the dates you mention are key - because 4ch only started really being mainstream, in the sense that there are actual government ops and bots there 24/7, in 2016 with the election. before that, calling someone a newfag was perfectly normal - as was the accompanying "lurk moar". tourists were much rarer and MUCH more obvious
     now, unless you're an oldfag of a particular board or thread to know the deeper lore behind barely-noticable turns of phrase and stupid shit like the subtle way some anons punctuate things, there's genuinely not a good way to tell a tourist from a bot from a genuine anon. mainly because most actual anons left years ago. the sinkhole made out of 2016 pol has dragged down almost the entire rest of the site with it - with the small exception of some of the extremely niche / slow boards which werent frequented even during actual anon hayday years. The saddest part is anons NEW the site was becoming shit, and that is when /pol/sters really started to attract the disgust usually reserved for /b/astards who were constantly trying to bait people into doing actual illegal activity.
     the only place you'll find anons from prime 4ch years are either extremely obscure forums and irc chats, a few orbiting websites closely associated with chan culture (basically dead nowadays, outside of maybe r/a/dio), and the extreme fringe of places like fedi - which frankly is just the slough of older twitter. the rest of the oldfags are grown enough to be completely gone, for the most part.
     it's overall a shit situation because there are no good altchans, fedi frankly doesnt provide what chans did (not to say it's not good for other things), and so much of "chan culture" has been reduced to mere shitty botes repoasting greentext on twitter for millions of people to barely understand the context of, but get a short-lived laugh out of the silly ways the internet people talked. On top of that internal culture 4chan had, it's near-completely lost the "meme factory" quality it had to it, mostly because it's government operations clearly and obviously trying to push whatever manufactured bullshit they've come up with to influence internet-public-consciouness.

     That’s why the shills all congregate there. You get shills from every agency, in every government throughout the world, you get to see what the NSA wants you to think in between Mossad posters pushing you to hate the KGB posters.

     Aside from that…..eh, sometimes it’s a useful digest for quickly developing news, a single thread is easier to follow thatn the mess you see on other things where it’s hidden in a maze of replies

     first thing i always point to, is that /wsg/ and /gif/ *used* to be almost identical. now go to /gif/'s catalog (make sure to turn on SFW mode in 4chanX - theres some genuinely vile stuff there now) - and compare that to /wsg/. It's absolutely astonishing. /trash/ used to be entirely filled with /mlp/ fags who got mass reported and deleted off other more mainstream boards - now it's worse than /gif/ and /b/ combined.
     If we look at /lit/ - "scifi-fantasy general" has degenerated to half of the posters talking about pulp smut amazon churns out on kindle to pollute every genre known to man, another third of them are shilling literal chinese propaganda literature, the remaining anons are too caught up in arguing about why the formerly mentioned posters should all kill themselves for there to be any actual conversation about ACTUAL scifi and fantasy literature to be had
     - and the rest of /lit/ isn't too terribly far behind it. it was one of the boards i actually had a pretty high opinion of so i was surprised most to see globohomo niggerfaggotry cancer spread and take root so easily there.
     /g/ died long ago and is essentially the most reddit of the boards
     /a/ is shit and reddit but they at least keep up serious translation efforts for actual kino, which i can appreciate
     in almost every thread on every board, fighting about random shit almost always boils down to people calling each other faggot homosexual tranny retards, and spending entire bump-counts worth of posts talking about why the OTHER anon is ACTUALLY more of a tranny for their opinion about [insert completely irrelevant thing here]
     comparing all this to the discussions i remember fondly is frankly disheartening
