The Netflix situation was not ideal for the rest of the studio, but it's even worse now as people will pretty much pick and choose, on top of them mostly producing garbage, a bunch of these will go bankrupt
@coolboymew Yeah, pretty sure they'll up and die once artists/studios/… just realize they can't get enough revenue from it. And I don't think those platforms can be a loss leader because they ought to be a major revenue stream.
Which is pretty visible when you notice how so many studios are trying to run their own thing instead these days, which is probably just throwing the whole thing down even faster because people aren't going to accumulate a bunch of subscriptions (while buying a file/serie from time to time is fine, hopefully those will stay, specially DRM-free ones like Vimeo).
On top of that there's a crazy amount of garbage being produced that tempts nobody (Velma), and Netflix also keeps flushing money down the toilet in similar ways
@camedei456 very much so I believe. They outright get their money back from cinema showings a bunch of times I think, then there's the Chinese market that's ultra massive. And even for stuff that lost money there's always infinite home video sales that just gotta contribute to something
However, I'm not sure, but COVID might have put some permanent dent into that, and them also producing garbage with no legs that won't sell shit in the future isn't a good look either
@coolboymew >I just don't know if they recovered from that dent or not The only American movie to perform well in the 2020s (as of late) was "Top Gun: Maverick" in 2022, seconded by "Jurassic Park Dominion" in 2021 to a significantly lesser extent.
@coolboymew >Avatar Isn't that from the studio notorious for releasing woke trash?
It's also interesting to see that crowd-pleasers now make more than woke trash, but I guess that's because the 3-trillion-dollar circular Ponzi scheme known as ESG is finally starting to burn out.
@camedei456 I don't know about this new one, first one was definitively "muh environment" but I think it somewhat managed to avoid the worst of the woke stuff of today and still managed to be a pleasant movie
@berkberkman@lanodan there's also the sheer censorship. I believe that Disney+ has some missing Simpsons episodes and I heard of a couple ridiculous stuff
Why bother
I've always wondered about studios and IP holders sitting on a crazy amount of stuff. If they won't even add these to the service (noise issue, maybe?) then what's the point?
I always thought they should do some ad supported free TV Channels online with these, but with some semi-effort, actually updating the schedule and stuff 2-4 times a year like old TV channels used to do
@LoliHat@coolboymew I recall seeing a 2-D screening of the first one in cinemas. I thought the film had a bad plot. Little did I know that 3-D was the film's essential crutch.
@coolboymew@camedei456@LoliHat the new one is the best looking movie i have ever seen, especially in 3d, but its the same as the first one, muh enviro but this one is also save muh whales. the white people are the bad guys and not the japanese, so thats weird.
@lanodan@berkberkman I would have had to sub to 3 different services and that was a no and I have ethical issues with Funi and CR. on top of possibly funding the horrible dubbing industry of Funi
@berkberkman@coolboymew Yeah, availability on streaming services is why I don't pay crunchyroll for example, torrents are doing a better job at archiving and distributing their own stuff. Last time I looked I would get barely 20% of what I watch, with cases like only few seasons missing while the rest are available.
@coolboymew@berkberkman@lanodan why couldn't they just make it like youtube but lets say have fliters so people who don't want to watch black face bugs bunny don't have to.
@coolboymew@berkberkman@lanodan Funny how the only actual movie studios with ad-supported IPTV streams are Sony (Cinevault, Game Show Central), Filmrise, Invincible Entertainment (Watch It, Business Rockstars, El Conflicto, Galxy) and Cinedigm (RetroCrush, Hallmark Movies & More, Hi-YAH!, ConTV, etc.).
@lanodan@coolboymew A lot of old anime and manga (and similarly with comics and cartoons) are still difficult to find, too. Recently, I wanted to read this cutesy manga about some maid/demon girl (Lucu Lucu). As of now, there's no official English print copy (but at least there's a fan scan online). lucu-lucu-1.jpg
@berkberkman@coolboymew Yeah, archival is the worst part, we're loosing entire TV Shows, movies and books way too quickly.
Like it took me multiple tries to have some animes that I watched in my childhood without ending up buying second-hand DVDs (which after 15+ years probably don't work that well anymore). For VHS era I gave up.
@lanodan@coolboymew@berkberkman@coolboymew >it took me multiple tries to have some animes that I watched in my childhood without ending up buying second-hand DVDs Funnily enough, I plan on doing that for really old cartoons, good and bad. However, there are already full YouTube uploads with the right search tools. I did so a few hours ago with some old and bizarre Christian CGI cartoon that I found (nowhere else has it officially): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Cj80rrc-KE
The ww2 era WB cartoons are a bit spicy in current day, but erasing history is always a mistake. I probably should have bought them on laserdisc when i had the chance lol.
