been thinking about doing something with zelda 64 decomp, and i realized i could rework the control scheme to have a good camera by forcing the player to map 2p inputs onto their controller and polling the second controller. this would let me make use of every button that's on every common PC controller
this is gonna present a barrier to entry that's immediately gonna turn away a lot of potential players, but i think having two analog sticks for 3d games would make it worth it.
when trying to figure out the most intuitive way to set this up for people, i think it makes the most sense if
the p1 c buttons map to the face buttons
the p1 dpad maps to the dpad
the p1 start button is the start button, and the p2 start button is the select button
p1 L and R become L1 and R1, p2 L and R become L2 and R2
p1 B and A become L3 and R3 (push sticks in)
does this seem simple to remember when setting it up? would p1 Z and p2 Z make more sense for pushing sticks in?

@All_bonesJones I'd have to try it out to fully judge I'm afraid

@coolboymew well, you could try it out right now by trying to set it up in whatever n64 emulator you use. this isn't a question of "will this play well," this is a question of "will this be easy for the average person to set up in their emulator's controls settings"
i'm still not fully sure what i'm gonna do with the controls, i can't decide if i want to add a dedicated jump button or not, and if i do, do i want it on the same face button as "confirm?" it seems like that would result in a lot of unwanted talking if you're platforming near NPCs or other interactive objects, but making select confirm is unintuitive. the objects issue could be solved by level design, but there's always going to be some chucklefuck that wants to try and skip something or clip somewhere near an npc. that type of player is normally a minority you can safely ignore but they tend to be the type that plays romhacks

@coolboymew basically if at any point you had to double check my post to confirm it's set up right, then i need to simplify it

@All_bonesJones don't have the time this morning to try it out unfortunately
