     I’m near positive that the majority of nonwhites cannot articulate the purpose and general design of a smoke detector. All they know is that it goes off when they burn something in the oven, they probably couldn’t tell you why it’s beeping aside from the correlation that it beeps when there’s smoke.

     Hell, maybe that’s just a side effect and the “smoke detector” has something to do with keeping the lights on. What powers it, why iot needs a battery, are all pointless mysteries when you ask them about it

     iirc it's actually an air detector and not a smoke detector. the lack of air just sets it off.
