   I'd say it depends, because I've typically only ever seen per deims offered basically as a substitute for filing expenses.
   "We're having you go out of town so don't bother collecting receipts, we'll just give you $50 a day for food and you can spend it however you like."
   In which case I wouldn't consider it part of my salary because that's only money I spent because you sent me on the trip.

     I consider it income because they're giving us $150/ea/day and we're shacking up 6 dudes in an Airbnb/vrbo that's running us $300/night and eating Little Caesars and drinking Keystone
     
     Always end up banking an extra $600-700/wk when we work out of town between the per diem and OT (ain't got shit else to do might as well work 12s)

     Yeah IDK what the guy was saying. I thought he said “two ten per diem” but when I asked a fren he said it’s “$2.10”, which makes me wonder if that’s per duty hour since they would pay hotels

     You're basically illustrating why there is an entire specialized accounting and tax industry that covers just pilots and other airline personnel - the rules are complex and base/domicile are not as straight forward as they seem.

     Even before turbotax it was easy. Also there is a 100% chance your CPA is just using the $50 turbotax and charging you a couple hundred for the pleasure
