Kinda cool, apparently Spacex is looking to use it in some capacity for it's mars shit.
A little corpo money might do something for it.In conversation permalink -

> I just think it's kind of fun
Yeah, I gave them money once. I used to boot it on my laptop: started way faster than Linux and you could do some sort of basic computations with it.
> I've been playing with Risc-os this week.
Ha, yeah? Do go on.
Most of what I know about RISC OS is from when I was learning ARM assembly back in the day, and the best site for learning that was this page about Acorn RISC machines, there was a bunch of stuff about RISC OS, which was dead before I heard of that page. Apparently the guy has changed from heyrick.co.uk to heyrick.eu but it looks like he still just has his old stuff up: https://heyrick.eu/assembler/index.html . It is kinda surreal that the OS is somehow back.In conversation permalink Attachments

Atm I would say it's really fun to play with, not so much to live in yet. Idk its kind of anachronistic but some of the ideas behind it make a lot of sense. I think it gives a bit of insight into ARM.

I could opine more if I could afford one of those $8,000 Arm blades.
I think where it's at is the early adopter stage in terms of servers and such.
It's main application atm is of course cell phones, tablets and IoT shit. I mean you can go down the rabbit hole of that stuff and get lost for ever.
Its well worth embracing for that niech of computing I think. In conversation permalink † top dog :pedomustdie: likes this. -

Have you played with mpi yet? I've been working a lot on this. Has sent me a very nice paper which helped me find throttling points -- so for performance I can just throw threads at the problem*.

Now that I have free time I'm going hardcore on all these things I've wanted to dive into.
Honestly my goal this winter is really be more disciplined on programming. It's always something I've needed to do but after years of contracting I became too reliant on those dumb ass point and click applications.

I don't really run out of juice or run into compatibility issues on any of them. It is a pain that the boot process is often wonky and you end up stuck with a vendor kernel half the time.In conversation permalink † top dog :pedomustdie: likes this. -

The best distro is Fedora Universal blue
>Unlike traditional Linux distributions, the base image is intended to be used "out-of-the-box" as it is. Packages are installed via Flatpak whenever possible (except for IDEs in some cases, more below). Should that not be possible, you can use distrobox to have images of mutable distributions where you can install applications normally.
>Want an application that is only available on Arch Linux and one that is only on Ubuntu? Well, now can have both!
>Distrobox is very powerful; for example, you can use it to host your entire development environment completely separate from your host system. Or use it to run a container for your virtual machines.
Really embodies Poettering's Vision of an immutable OS.In conversation permalink -
