The "excessive interest" definition is a papist cope from the late 1500's meant to excuse changing their doctrine on usury and getting in on the action.
I'm sympathetic to the notion of personal freedom and caveat emptor, but let's face it, most people have no idea what they're reading in a contract, and financial markets are totally captured. It's functionally impossible to operate without debt unless you made very smart decisions more than a decade ago.-
