There are people in this thread that do this. I don't think it's a good idea, but people do it. I think attempting to block Hetzner is going to be more trouble than it's worth.Machismo repeated this. -

One fed instance shows up and now you start implementing whitelisting at a firewall level. That's really funny because if you implement that you would be one uping mastodon fediblocking. What's next blocking ToR IP, GeoIP block?
Never thought I'd see the day the Pleroma Shitnexus would lose their testicals over some dumb shit like this.

I stumbled into this network, partly as a result of people making lists on diaspora. and now – people making lists.one fine day, email was invented, and the next day spam. on the third day came credential services.

For mastodon, the UA that's generated is hardcoded and always contains the domain. And if you catch someone changing that, you can probably harass them for AGPL violations because it's likely they didn't publish their sourcecode changes anywhere
It might not stop anything else they're using the server for, but at that point you're gonna become paranoidMachismo repeated this. -

You can't really rely on anything that is user-supplied for this. Source-based is bad enough.Machismo repeated this. -

Yeah, it's why I said blocking every instance that uses hetzner gives me the same vibe as the Oliphant "block anyone who uses soapbox" list, if not moreso. Since using hetzner is a practical choice, the only way a lot of people can afford to host an instance, and not just an aesthetic one. -

What I mean is that the data is client-supplied, provided by a source external to your machine, and thus unreliable for the same reason that asking someone their name can be useful but is not reliable. You can look at it, but you can't tell a machine to rely on it.
Source-based filtering is slightly more useful but not generally useful.
