We need an actual IP attorney to weigh in, but you can certainly trademark existing words - consider "Apple".
So it wouldn't surprise me if you can in fact trademark an existing Unicode character.
Trademark doesn't prevent people from using your mark, it just prevents them from using it to offer competing goods or services in the same industry or market. Which is why my local fruit stand can still sell "apples".
