HD drive mechanisms set into "quad density" 300 RPM mode so they could be formatted to the same capacity as DD 3.5" disks (and work within the data rate limitations of the Amiga's floppy controller). -

I was a relative late-comer to 3.5" disks getting my first Amiga in 1989 and even at that point a 10-pack was ~$30CAD at the time, over $60 in today's dollars! It seems like a minor point now but it really can't be overstated how much more affordable 5.25" blanks were at least up until about the mid-90s.
