@kinoko @lnxw37b2 @ageha my original comment was only in reference to the state of one's immortal soul. otherwise I agree, I have no interest pushing for society to punish shoplifters stealing formula for their child.

@Moon @kinoko @lnxw37b2 @ageha Shoplifters don't steal formula for their children, they steal it to resell it. They make it harder for parents who actually need it to get it and profit off that.

@lnxw37b2 @kinoko @Moon @ageha I'm not particularly inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to common criminals in a country where it's much easier to eat yourself to death than it is to starve. The reason why stuff like formula gets stolen often enough to get locked up is not desperate young mothers who can't feed their babies through no fault of their own.

Unfortunately, none of us knows ALL shoplifters, so none of us knows why every one of them does it. What we do know is that lots of churches get a flood of people showing up the last week of the month asking for food and help paying rent. Thus, there are often other options available besides theft. And stealing from "the man" is still stealing, so if one is not at risk of starving, they shouldn't do it.
