OK, let's crap all over the stupid Exoprimal game, since I've downloaded it through Gamepass to check it (because, literally, fuck it paying for this shit).
The character creation sucks. You basically have two options: bulky dude or plain woman. If you pick a masculine head type, you'll always have the bulky body, and if you pick a female head, you'll always have the shitty, plain, devoid of any curves whatsoever, body,
And all the preset women are ugly as fuck, BTW, as you can surely see in the thumbnails on the left side. This game might be the first one to compel me to crate a male character just because the females are so unbelievably ugly (the men are also ugly, but I think I can use the scars and shit to make a "badass" guy").
BTW, do you see the heads you can pick? That's it. You pick the head, it changes the body, and that's it. Fine tuning? Nah, it doesn't exist. You pick in between a bunch of preset faces (skin color is locked), a bunch of preset hairs (all of them shitty, btw), a bunch of preset facial hair, and you'll be happy with it. Delight yourself with our 12 preset options. But hey, at least you can change eye color and hair color.
All the men's hairstyles are stupid, and almost all the women's hairstyles are "Karen's" hairstyles, everytime you try to create a female character in this game she looks like she wants to speak with the dinossaur's manager.
In the end, I think I've settled for this fellow here, it looked like the less stupid option.
Remember kids, 60 bucks game.
Let's see how the rest of it goes. Sure, I'm nitpicking because I like character customization, but in this game, by what I understand, we'll barely see the actual human character.

@Suzu @rlier23 idk the last thing i knew was longsword was the best weapon hands down but my knowledge is out of date ask @Cayhr
-
@rainignterror1080p @rlier23 IDK, I'm still wondering what I'll play. I was thinking in going with that sword that tu8nrs into an axe because I think it looks cool, but apparently you can't willy-nilly change forms, you need to "charge" some things by doing attacks before changing for a short time.
Insect Glaive also looks cool and gimmicky, and probably sucks.
-
@rlier23 @Suzu ah so sword and shield was toned down from generations to world
-
@rlier23 @Suzu my favorite weapon was gunblade and it was ass i looked for meta builds for it with youtube vids back when i played world and there were none :gura_pain: was it still ass in generations?
-
@Suzu i personally prefer world is better than rise and @rlier23 was saying generations was better than world
-
@rainignterror1080p @Suzu GU is peak monhun
-
@rainignterror1080p I have never played any MH game before, to be perfectly honest.
I mean, I may have launched them, and spent hours creating a character, but I've never really "played" them.
I have Rise here, I bought it because it was lighter in requirements that World, and back in the day I didn't have a GPU. Steam says I have 19 hours in the game, but I'm pretty sure they were all spent creating a waifu and then with the game open while I browsed the internet.
-
@Suzu You played rise before?
-
I mean. This is the customization in Exoprimal. And then for comparison, there is the customization in Warframe, a 10 year old F2P game.
-
OK, I got MVP, so now my complaints about the game can't be dismissed as a "skill issue"
As I said, the "run and gun" is actually pretty good, but the game becomes dull and boring as fuck. I've played exactly 10 matches so far, and I'm already sick of it.
I think I'll install Monster Hunter Rise and play it instead.
Damn, I'm glad I didn't pay for this.

Them we are introduced to our diverse cast of characters: Fat nigger who's the boss, white nerd cripple, and Strong Woman Who Needs no Man and has Red Hair and a Strong Genius™. Unfortunately I didn't screenshot the actual introduction, this is how you see them in the "game hub".
Just after meeting them, you are sucked by some dimensional thing, then you go to to an island and a crazy AI takes you back in time, then you meet a guy, then 3 other people who don't really talk appear, and then you kill a bunch of dinosaurs for a "test" the AI is doing.
And that's the story of the game. There is an AI in an island, the AI picks people from different dimensions and throw them at different time periods, and then the AI summons a bunch of dinosaurs to kill those people. So you're supposed to blast away the dinosaurs. I can't really complain about this story, desu. I just need an excuse to pit robots agains dinosaurs.
And the gameplay feels good. I played just a couple matches, but the gunplay is nice, and playing with melee characters feels as good. There are 3 default "classes", the Offensive, the Tank and the Support, but they all feel OK to play (playing as a tank and having a big fucking shield to hold back the dinosaurs, and them punching them right on the face is neat, and you don't feel like you're missing anything for not playing as the DPS). You can also change suits mid battle, so you don't need to feel like you're stuck with your choice.
There are only 10 exosuits, though. 4 DPS, 3 tank and 3 support, and one of each class is locked and you need to either buy them as DLCs, or reach player level 20, 30 and 40 and then buy them using the in-game money.
Exosuit customizations is... eh.
Each exosuit has it's default weapon and a couple different attacks. These can't be changed. You also can pick an "implement", which is a secondary weapon, that can also be changed when you change your suit mid battle. There are... 6 implements to choose. And 3 of them are locked behind DLCs or player level + in game currency.
You also have 3 slots for "Modules", which are passive abilities that improve the suit. All of them are locked behind player level + in game currency (well, at least they are not selling character power in DLCs or locked behind the paid battlepass track. For now). Each suit has 6 modules specific for them, that you need to unlock with suit level (each "module slot" has 2 suit-specific modules that can go in them), and then there are a bunch of generic modules that are unlocked with player level.
So, remember when I said that the character customization was very lackluster, but I was mostly nitpicking because you'll barely see the character in game? Well, you see the exosuits all the time, and the suit aesthetic customization is very, very barebones. You can't even change the suit colors by default, like you can do in Warframe. You need to get a premade "skin", and those skins are locked behind either DLCs, lootboxes or the premium battlebass track. Skins (specially the premium ones locked behind DLCs or premium tracks) also have some very stupid customizations, because fuck "immersion", amirite? We are playing a game about robots shooting dinosaurs, there is no problem in my character being dressed as a card king, or as a quarterback, or as whatever le funny meme Capcom decides to introduce in the next patches, amirite?
Weapons are the same, BTW. You have a couple colors to pick for each, but those are all "skins" locked either behind lootboxes or battlepass.
Besides that, you can also place some "decals" in 3 specific locations, and all of them are, you guessed it, locked behind lootboxes, DLC or premium battlepass.
And you can also add a keychain to your character, and I won't repeat myself, you already got the hang about what's it locked behind.
So, yeah, exosuit customization is very "meh".
And that's it. It's a game that at a glance looks very cool and the run and gun gameplay is good, despite it probably getting very boring after a while. But it's completely held back by a sum of very stupid and predatory monetization schemes coupled with a very stupid choice of aesthetics and probably pandering on the part of Capcom. It might have been worth it as a F2P game, but you'd be hard pressed to pay 60 bucks on this piece of crap.
I predict it will die in a short time and then Capcom will release it as a F2P game where you only get 1 suit from each class and have to unlock everything else with microtransactions, and that's how they'll keep it going on life support from them on.

@rainignterror1080p >longsword was the best weapon hands down
...no, I would not endorse this idea, and I am a long-time LS player.
Longsword has this "best weapon" perception but really it is the most "catered to" weapon as a result of the recent title MH Rise/Sunbreak, which is the title with the normie influx. Capcom made that weapon a whole lot of dumb and even replaced the traditional Sword & Shield as the starting weapon because they wanted to play it safe with the expected audience. It is also not the best weapon because it does not have much utility (compared to stun capacity, high motion value attacks, and ammo effects), nor is it topping speedrun times. Besides, if you want to talk about "best weapon" there are other weapons that are way easier to play than LS and perform just as well if not better (cough bowguns cough). I HATE how the LS plays in Rise/SB.
I only play Longsword because I enjoy it. It has the right amount of speed and range for me, and I also just like the flowing swordsman style. As you can probably tell, I like the animes. You have to LIKE IT to play it. Also it's notorious for tripping teammates thanks to its incredibly wide sweep attacks, so you'll actually find me running Bowgun or Bow in MP hunts sometimes.
Suzu is looking for a place to start. I highly, highly recommend GU. World is okay to start (I started there), but play GU. Most people are going back to GU and World. Both have things exclusive to them and their own quirks.
As for a weapon, figuring that out can be a journey. It may click immediately, or it will take time to find. Hence why you start with SNS. It's an easy to learn weapon that has its capabilities, and is actually rather safe with the ability to block but still move quickly (fast sheath vs CB/Lance/GL).

@rlier23 But it's different from parry abuse. Valor LS is technically parry abuse, but it is a WAYYY more fun and satisfying playstyle. Meanwhile Rise/SB is... annoying. It's annoying! It's not really fun! I feel locked. Worse, I'm battling with game's input system and sometimes it doesn't register the simultaneous button presses. It's ANNOYING and FRUSTRATING. I want to flow, not just SIT THERE in a DUMB CIRCLE... WAITING for the monster to attack.
Guard points are also very different from counters, despite Valor LS effectively being a counter specific playstyle. I am okay with Foresight and Special Sheath, but the emphasis on Special Sheath in SB is way too much. People were asking for a buff to Special Sheath with Quick Sheath's frame data, but they went ALL IN on that playstyle. I think they misinterpreted people wanting a buff to Special Sheath's animation via QS as "people like Special Sheath so that's the direction we go." No, we just wanted it to be a liiiittle bit more impactful on the sheathing animation to make not make last-frame situations the norm at MR level speed on monsters.
Plus guard points also have some intricacy to the timing and whatnot, and are much more satisfying to pull off (single button press goes a long way, such as with shielding with CB).
@rainignterror1080p @Suzu
-
@rainignterror1080p @Cayhr @Suzu it's parry abuse basically
-
@rainignterror1080p @Cayhr @Suzu yes it's the best weapon i think vut it's braindead easy to use
-
@rlier23 @Cayhr @Suzu maybe i'm retarded because i couldn't figure out how to use it or just use it properly
-
@rlier23 @Cayhr @Suzu i thought they buffed it and then with the wire counter made it objectively the best weapon in the game
-
@rainignterror1080p @Suzu @Cayhr yeah thats right ls is braindead easy
-
@Suzu If you ever plan on playing Charge Blade, learn what a Guard Point is. ;)
@rainignterror1080p @rlier23
-
@Cayhr @rlier23 @rainignterror1080p now I know how people who don't know/aren't interested in Linux feel when they see a thread of us discussing Linux stuff.
I mean, those are certainly all words, and I'm pretty sure I understood most of them.
-
@Cayhr @rainignterror1080p @rlier23 Charge Blade is the big swotd that turns into an axe, right? This one looks pretty cool.
I was checking here the chocolate waifu, and I was using the Bow with her. I'll try to change to something else now.
-
@Cayhr @rainignterror1080p @rlier23 Oh no, the Charge Blade is the sword and shield that turns into an axe. The one I'm thinking about is the Switch Axe, I think this one is cooler
-
@puuyo nah. It gets boring pretty quickly. As I said, the gameplay is not bad, but the way it works becomes boring and dull.
I played tonight, did 10 matches or so, and grew very tired of it.
It's available on Gamepass, so I say, pick the 15 day free gamepass trial, if you don't have it, and play it just to see. But it certainly is not worth it to spend 60 bucks in this game.
-
@Suzu I was looking at picking this up. The real question is... Is it FUN?
