@LittleTom I have no moral obligations to people who want me dead. I will steal their work and ruin their ability to support themselves, and I'll sleep like a baby afterwards.
@ChristiJunior@berkberkman@LittleTom they should be worried because a lot of them are industry losers AND/OR insufferable, so it will be easy to cut them out
@berkberkman@LittleTom This was apparently made in 15 minutes, based on a very limited sample of voice clips. Yeah, English-language VAs should be worried:
@coolboymew@berkberkman@LittleTom What % of anime watchers would be okay with dubs disappearing altogether, and just sticking to subs? Outside of kids watching shit like Pokemon, I think the number would be way above 70%.
There's a reason why the sub/dub debate is heated, because sub people could legitimately do without dubs. Dubbies have earned the hate in a lot of ways because a lot of them are literally stuck with early 2000s argument, seriously, literally the shit I used to parrot before I came across a dub do bad when I actually started watching anime that I really had to use subs
The reality is that the current american anime dub market is of such low quality it's crazy, and all of it is Dubbies' fault that they won't demand for better
@ChristiJunior@LittleTom@berkberkman Like, I ain't even against dubs. It's just that as someone who is in a unique geolocation, I've seen dubs all my life, and I can tell you what's a good dub, and what's a bad dub. and anime pretty much nearly constantly is pure mediocrity and always manages to undermine it one way or another with terrible inconsistency of casting
I used to watch Dr.House 3 times a day while I was neeting. English and French. It was only possible because I didn't feel like I was crossing a dimension every time I switched languages. Why can't I have this for anime? To be fair, the unique Japanese voices and gimmick already makes this tough for the industry, but it's something they should've solved by now
@coolboymew@ChristiJunior@LittleTom@berkberkman and VAs can't expect to be liked after ruthlessly ruining the VA career of Vic Mignogna because he was about to be promoted over them in Funimation. Yeah you're all a den of snakes with a gay casting couch and you unnecessarily showed the whole world this so that you could win at office politics, but gosh I hope you don't lose any work to AI.
It was literally a mirror of GG, same kinda cliquey bullshit from their ivory tower, people that should've known better but stir Internet shit and fight with fans
@coolboymew@berkberkman@ChristiJunior@LittleTom Listen to the audiobook (or clips if you can find them) for Bakemonogatari The anime should have English VA that good (Araragi's VA is pretty good but all the girls and Oshino are FANTASTIC)
@ChristiJunior@coolboymew@LittleTom@berkberkman Depends. I got my mom into Spy x Family but she's too much of a Boomer to watch subs. There's unfortunately a big normie/casual market, not to mention the steady increase of functional illiteracy in America.
@coolboymew@berkberkman@ChristiJunior@LittleTom I know the VAs suck but, after listening to yoasobi sing idol in english, or amaki sally voicing her roles in both japanese and english, the "anime voice" just doesn't work with english, idk maybe if they talked normally they could make something better
All the voices in French for CSS for example are really not bad at all and are rather close, except for Sakura's brother's friend which I'm not dealing with the different names right now
They're able to do the girl high pitched anime voices, why doesn't the English side?
@LucoaMilkers@ChristiJunior@LittleTom@berkberkman Look, I'm not asking for pure perfection, I understand the fact that there's different things you can do in different language, but this dub is rather close to the original. It's possible
@coolboymew@berkberkman@ChristiJunior@LittleTom yeah this actually sounds good, I don't how much of what I'm feeling is just bias, but when I listen to english dubs I always feel like they're too obsessed with sounding like anime they end up sounding like tiktok cosplayers rather than giving a pleasant stable performance
alwaya remember to ask people to name ten books before you have a serious conversation with them. Or ask what book they’re currently in the middle of reading.
@veff@berkberkman@ChristiJunior@LittleTom@coolboymew Ask them to name just one book and describe what it's about. W*men love using books as props. Even better is if they can name a book you actually read and can discuss.
@ChristiJunior@berkberkman@LittleTom@coolboymew i'm not so sure of that, zoomers now make a solid % of anime watchers and they are so completely retarded and arrogant that its a herculean task to teach one to pirate and stop paying to watch dubbed crunchyshit
@smugumin@berkberkman@ChristiJunior@coolboymew >trying to convince someone that they can double click qbittorrent.exe and click a button on nyaa without acquiring a degree in computer science
Nepotism means every dub is done by the same few people with 2 or 3 voices that may or may not fit the character Everyone is either trying to clone the jp VA clone some other voice they know or trying to ham it up to make another ghost stories meme dub When they try to imitate the jp VA they often fail miserably becuase there is such a massive gap between their skill and the A list jp VA I think open auditions would fix a lot of this stuff
