     My last ear pads died in last summer and I replaced them exactly by what you described. They're comfortable, I literally wear them 7 hours a day at least considering I bring them to work.

     @coolboymew I always recommend Beyerdynamic. I own the DT 880 model. (My nephew inherited my previous DTX 710.). Sound quality is great and they’re very comfortable.

     My audiotechnica still sound great but the padding flakes once it’s a bit aged and levees bits of black material on ears and hair. Can find replacement ear covers but not headband

     @coolboymew To me they seem to be as tall as oval ones so probably. These also have the benefit of having replacable pads and with a little soldering the cable can be replaced too.

     The one pair of Sennheisers I had about 10 years ago failed by a combo of cable and headband after 2 years. The Audiotechnicas I had failed on the headband swivels, cable was fine after 5 years. These DT770s I have look like they might fail at the headband pivots, but the hardware is replaceable. Cable strain relief at the earcup is adequate and the 1/4" jack feels solid, however, I don't like the feel of the 3.5mm inside the 1/4" adapter.

     As for external soundcard, do you have something that'll work for Linux? If it's external, I assume I just plug it in the loudest jack and it should do it's thing without software? What do recommend?

     1 cable in the PC's jack, one longer cable, and one shorter at the end
     
     All of this is long enough for watching on the TV on my La-Z-Boy
     
     I disconnect the second cable to connect in the home system for Switch gaming
     
     Or I disconnect the 3rd short cable to connect directly in phone, Steam Deck or Switch in portable mode

     @coolboymew sony mdr-7506 has always been a good headphone staple and relatively cheap at like 80 or 90 bucks, durable and lasts long- up to a decade or more. considered a staple in the "professional studio world" or something- make what you need for it.

     @coolboymew @Nelenese I have a Superlux HD681 lying around, Samson SR850 is my preferred semi-open, I've had a couple of different versions of it (used to donate them), there's a really good version and an "ok" version, can't really tell from packaging. The "ok" version was still nicer than the Superlux I got, just not "I will interchange this with my brother's Sennys without complaint" good.

     @coolboymew @Nelenese Samsons used to be really cheap too, though inflation has pushed it up a bit which is why I ended up trying the Superlux too instead of just buying more of them (not because they break but because I like being able to leave spares around the place for musical instruments etc.)
