     Some "metadata-only" mode could be a stopgap solution if that continues; just show the channels, video info and comments while prompting to view the video itself in external player.

     @mint I wrote simple curl scripts for that in the past. that was enough for getting metadata and viewing the content in my VLC. but I don't have time to tinker with the web. and youtube puts spokes in the wheel to independent services and users.
     I work with video streaming myself, but I deal with media data encoding and retranslation on servers, etc. far from user interfaces.
