     Probably a direct appeal to consumers who hate exclusives.
     
     Consoles have a place for people who don't want to have to become tech savvy to play video games. The prevalence of phone race shows that this demographic will never go away. There will always be consumers who just want to plug and play, gas and go, or add water and throw it in the microwave.
     
     Especially if you're a parent buying an electronic babysitter for your kid, all you want to do is plop down some fun box in front of the TV and know that it just works. And that demographic is always willing to pay for the convenience.

     The other thing is. Why even have a physical copy, if it doesn't include the whole game and requires an online service (Steam, PSN,...) to even complete the install. You still don't own it.

     @coolboymew @emma @phnt I used to be involved in some game dev stuff, but the team I worked for got too fuckin goofy for me and I left the scene entirely because of it. I strongly encourage piracy now even from indies because I haven't met anybody in that scene who isn't utterly depraved.
