@theorytoe@lina There aren't many video games nowadays that really leave a lasting impact. And even among the ones that do, fandom faggotry makes trying to discuss them online hell.
@lina honestly its probably a result of the hyper comoditization of video games
and kinda internet culture in general nothing lasts its just attention sifting every 10 seconds to the newest thing and all appreciation for the old is gone
@theorytoe i've seen games gather cult followings, but i've really never seen recent indie games manage that, shit like undertroon and deltatroon and fnaf doesn't really count because the former was exactly what i described, a whole bunch of tumblr troon types rushing to current reddit game of the month to catch some likes and reposts over being hip and trendy or some shit and the latter is a brand now also its playerbase is literally 10 year olds it really isn't like old games like unreal, worms, half life, doom, duke nukem, etc.
@lina well nobody really cares about a game much after its release really I mean hell hollow knight is practically dead and any good indie game community is dead
@lina@theorytoe The problem with the Western indie scene is that it's gatekept by the same faggots that hijacked all other forms of entertainment, so everything they make is ugly and derivative. All the memorable games I can think of that are relatively recent are Japanese. Games are like any other form of art, if you have an inspired and inspiring vision you can make it happen, but being saturated in Current Year leftism kills the soul and smothers whatever divine spark you may have had.
@ArdainianRight@theorytoe you really can't make a lasting impact anymore with conventional means, graphics? sorry that was the main battle way ago and i think that shit peaked with nfs 2015, that may be a shit game but it has the most realistic graphics thus far sensational gameplay and shit? nobody tries to make something really unique, out of indie games the best you'll get is a nintendo-type ripoff because people don't have taste and don't base their games off good games soundtrack? moot point, music is subjective, but imho you won't outdo unreal tournament 99 and deus ex quirky funny meme game? kill yourself if your dream game implies shoving in unfunny unrelated memes into it to stay relevant
@lina@ArdainianRight you cant make a lasting impact because everything is so oversaturated
sure you cant make an impact on the whole industry at this point, but why? we are at the point where you can point to roots no matter how unaware the dev is of where those roots are
you can call hollow knight a souls-like metroidvania even if its very different in its own right
> graphics? sorry that was the main battle way ago and i think that shit peaked with nfs 2015, that may be a shit game but it has the most realistic graphics thus far
Don't worry about trying to be Crysis (2007). Worry about having a distinct visual style that "sticks" in your mind. That's the trick there. Nobody uses the graphics hardware to do anything unique but either "ironically shit" graphics or the best you can do.
>sensational gameplay and shit? nobody tries to make something really unique, out of indie games the best you'll get is a nintendo-type ripoff because people don't have taste and don't base their games off good games
Blame that on most devs being fat neckbeards (physically or spiritually) when they make games, basing them off the same 4-5 Nintendo games or basises of influence.
They're not creative types either, they just want to get big money from doing gamedev at college but then graduate with no vision other than to ebeg on Twitter for a sex change surgery.
>soundtrack? moot point, music is subjective, but imho you won't outdo unreal tournament 99 and deus ex
I think a lot of devs forgot this IMO. They have so many bullshit forgettable Hollywood OSTs in video games these days and not some sick music that makes you feel like shooting a bunch of people online talking shit (in the video game of course).
@PurpCat@theorytoe@lina My stomach still churns thinking about how much the industry awards generic Hollywood bullshit OSTs because they came from big name games while snubbing obviously superior soundtracks because the game is too "anime" or some bullshit.
All of these from the same game that didn't even get nominated for TGA. I know I bitch about it a lot, but this game's soundtrack is absurdly memorable and varied, and the Western gaming industry doesn't give a fuck because Pyra's boobs were too big for them.
@lina@ArdainianRight@PurpCat >memorable absolutely the most important thing you dont have to do anything fancy, many games dont have outstanding soundtracks, but they are good and memorable
@PurpCat@theorytoe@ArdainianRight yeah, on music i will have to add that you don't have to try and make the best, most bombastic and epic soundtrack, you just have to make a good fucking soundtrack that is memorable, yakuza, devil may cry, sonic games do that well where i still listen to the music from them even though i haven't played the games in a while now
yeah its amazing hidieki naganuma is a blessing fromg God
and its partially why I am excited for bomb rush cyberfunk, not for the game nearly as much as I am for the soundtrack it sounds amazing with the trickle of what we have gotten so far
@ArdainianRight@theorytoe@lina You just got to keep looking. Check the /agdg/ threads on most video game imageboards or check more niche forums like RPG Codex (they have a section for user created RPGs and are anti-woke).
@theorytoe@ArdainianRight@lina@PurpCat Smash Bros. babies shocked by just how good the Xenoblade songs are don't even realize that Sakurai barely scratched the surface of the OST, and didn't even do a very good job of selecting the right songs.
