I will always defend the right for singleplayer/co-op games to have easy mode. You should bully people for using it, but like... The point of a game is to have fun. Except in the case of pvp, there's no reason to prevent people tweaking it to have fun their way. :rms: :gnujihad: etc.
Din's Curse is an excellent game, and town invasion is a critical part of that, but it's just not viable to play with in solo. So in solo, I turn it off, so that the game is actually fun. -
Anornymorse (anornymorse@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 19-Jun-2023 13:17:37 JST Anornymorse @Zerglingman Fun sometimes comes with mastery; The point of a game is to beat the game. Nobody is playing Mega Man for the friends they made along the way.
This also belies a fundamental issue post-SNES gamers have been saddled with: Difficult games, such as Contra, are designed that you get a little better each time you play it. N64-Era (and especially PS2 and Gamecube-era) kids have known nothing but Resident Evil 4 "Active Time Events" and "press X to win" gameplay as the sole innovations in gaming post-Quake. Nobody took the training wheels off for you guys.
Much like hard times create strong men, hard games create better gamers. Much like how good times make for weak men, Walking Simulators and "Press Square to watch a 30-second mid-battle cinematic" games make for the weakest gamers.
If you can't beat Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight, it isn't anyone's fault but the person that can't beat it. The game doesn't suck because it's too hard. The player sucks because they aren't good enough.Machismo likes this. -
Machismo (zerglingman@freespeechextremist.com)'s status on Monday, 19-Jun-2023 13:24:39 JST Machismo @anornymorse Again, Din's Curse. Town invasion isn't a case of getting better, it's flat-out impossible. You're given <30s to react to it before you lose, and this can occur when you're >30s away from the nearest gate.
And sure, that's not the case with all games. Sometimes the "easy mode" they present is just reducing enemy HP or whatever.
And I still think that serves a purpose as a stepping stone. Practice doing it flawlessly on easier difficulties so that you'll have room to make mistakes on higher difficulties. Maybe you don't want to do it that way, so don't use it. No problem.
If someone plays on easy and then stops playing, obviously they found something satisfying there; they had fun, whatever.
Walking simulators suck but that's not a problem to anyone who just... Doesn't play walking simulators. -
Anornymorse (anornymorse@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 19-Jun-2023 13:38:01 JST Anornymorse @Zerglingman That’s just poor game design, and a lack of QA/playtesting. Not all games can have the wisdom of a miyamoto guiding it, I guess.
If you ever have the pleasure of watching a newbie to gaming play The Legend of Zelda for the first time, the experience of watching them accidentally happen upon level 1 is magical. If you give them Zelda Redux, watching them figure out what to do with Bombs is just as amazing.
a foundational principle of good game design is guiding the player to a sense of mastery. This quality is sorely lacking, if not actively disrupted, in every game post-GameJournoPros and its postmodernism.

I bet I touched a nerve when I insulted post-Gamecube gamers.

Anornymorse (anornymorse@shitposter.club)'s status on Monday, 19-Jun-2023 13:44:16 JST Anornymorse @Zerglingman It must’ve been how every game post-Kotaku‘s woke phase had to cater to people that didn’t buy video games in order to “blue ocean” people who weren’t going to buy video games.
I hope so, because the only other alternative is to deny the influence Shee-gay’s had on literally every game you’ve ever played.
