   reddit is monetizing the API and getting rid of 3rd party apps, and the mods are freaking out because they rely on those to do all their free janny work.

   Mostly uninteresting, but it’s funny to see that there’s NOTHING protecting the delicate janny-mind from your posts and DMs. No armor, no blocks, nothing. You’re free to do your 1.0 to 3.0x mental damage without any defensive modifiers!

     This could be great. People mention going from a full request inbox in the past, to a total ghost town - that means they’re gonna lose their grip on the narrative, they’ll increasingly miss the mark.

     Just recall how the /right can’t meme/ sub was basicaly unironically enjoyed as the only place to find funny material on there anymore. Reddit can’t count on cheesy automation to bail them out on this stuff

     @Aether The big one is that app that everyone uses instead of reddit’s, Apollo. The guy ran the numbers and said he’d have to pay $2 million per month to provide service, and it was way too much. He did an interesting writeup about the experience.

     Reddit staff is exactly what I’d expect. Incompetent, non-technical, and run by hysterics. They’re looking at an IPO and they probably want to get rid of 3rd party competitors so they can bring everything in-house…they just don’t have any products to offer for it yet.

     @YTFoidLover1488 I don’t think they’ll have anything though. This move will shut down the mod tools, and reddit is acting like it’s gonna make them in its own in-house products….someday. No idea why it hasn’t over the last 2 decades, but hey

     @WashedOutGundamPilot Oh, fun! I remember, right after the 2016 election, I decided I was going to drive the mods of r/latestagecapitalism (home of that one brony who pinned a post praising the baseball game shooter) insane.
     
     > Every day, whenever I was bored, I picked a random five or so posts on their front page, and wrote a message about what Trump was going to do to them.
