This is a taste of what guys are doing, there are some home builder types who’ve been putting together some pretty cool electric EATO types of things that enable a burst of STOL
@GabeLakmann I’m cut in on most of the BTS stuff as they publicize it, we get a lot of interest from people about it so I have to stay pretty up to date on electronic aircraft.
So far, nothing REALLY useful has hit the market, the most realistically useful one I’ve seen is a homebuilt sonex kit, but even then you need the 220v charging infrastructure…at an airport. I KNOW it’s gonna happen soon though, we need pilots badly and avgas is $9/gal everywhere….and cessnas are ‘econo cruise’ at like 7gph
@GabeLakmann They’re trying to roll out unleaded now, and it’s another $2-4/gal from the few places that have it. And you have to pay a couple hundo for an STC sticker to legally use it, even if no modification is required.
We rate, cheapest I can see, is about $160/hr in the most affordable states, others $180. If you’re lucky you can find a crappy 152 for about ten bucks less
@d0c40r0@GabeLakmann He’s got some really cute little prop timing thingies where they fair back into slits along the wing, so you can go max power for climb out and enjoy normal flight afterwards.
(he’s just really flaky, very much an old school passion project guy so a lot of the client stuff falls by the wayside, from what a fren says. Said it reminds him of viking motors in that respect)
@d0c40r0@GabeLakmann Let me know how it runs, I know UL is kinda making some overtures towards getting into the US market more. I’d like to see some competition for the Rotax stuff again. Market is boring now.
@d0c40r0@GabeLakmann It’s a long effort, but the Heintz birds are good. Probably the route I’d go, though I’d probably put a bit of work into jazzing up the interior if you spend a lot of time in there. They’re a little too utilitarian for some, a buddy always complains about the tack-welded bars they used to provide.
As far as working on them, though, they’re very well thought out. Very spacious when you start getting into the guts, makes 100hrs a breeze. Kinda funny how the guy designed it after looking at a storch at a show and thinking he could take a bunch of those design cues
I’d post pics but my dad has decided he wants all of the frame and fuel tanks and such to be fabricated offshore so we’ve only got the prop in boxes and the engine also in a box rn
@d0c40r0@GabeLakmann I need to see if I kept them, but one of the trade shows recently had some pics of a pretty cool khaki colored CH, very utilitarian and great for hiding if you’re in the western states. I love the idea of being able to hide wherever I land off-airport
@d0c40r0@GabeLakmann haha, this is the exact thing. The second you mention pretty much any small aircraft or LSA he’ll start telling you about how crazy everyone is to just happily put up with the plainest contact surfaces for your controls. I’ve heard the same fevered rant at least 3 times by now, it’s always funny.
I don’t even totally disagree, but it’s easy enough to fix. Just find a nice, comfy joystick and slap it on there. They only look bad because boomers build the kit as-is without understanding that it’s unpolished to allow customization.
There’s a cool HUD system I saw the other day, has a nice control stick w/ AP, trim, radio on the hat, with controls for slaving HSI. Probably not worth the $10k retrofit but very cool to look at
@d0c40r0@GabeLakmann The part I’m curious on is whether or not it has a temp difference in the summer heat. I would bet it’s just a tad cooler than the dark colored ones guys always like. I never understand why guys go w/ glossy black aircraft, cleanliness nightmare and they always look dirty
