     Half As Interesting did a whole video on this topic, but there was a spy agency named "John Doe Company" that was formed as an offshoot of the Ringling Brothers, following a former CIA operative (a spook getting into the circus biz, how quaint) wrangling a few pandas for Ringling's shows.
     The John Doe Company (that name was chosen to keep the operation secret) would first invade a few animal rights organizations and steal info on everything from partner's addresses to credit card numbers and health records of regular donors in an attempt to work against fundraising efforts and get people to quit. The organizations previously tormented this way were PAWS, the Elephant Alliance and PeTA.
     Amusingly, the spies considered PeTA the biggest threat, to a level where one of the spied broke into the executive director's home to take photos.
     The John Doe Company would also torment aspiring bookwriter Jan Pottker for seven years over a Regardie's article about the Feld family, their nefarious business dealings and Irving's homosexuality, following Ken Feld's request to stop Pottker from writing and releasing her planned book on the Felds. It was named internally "Project Preempt".
     
     The way the public learned about this part of the Ringlings was even more stranger...

     How was this revealed to the public?
     That involves a time when Charles Smith sued for wrongful termination, following a Ringling spook messing up Charles' order to destroy tapes recorded when he bugged the house to catch his girlfriend cheating (he never did) and return the girlfriend's car.
     How was it botched? The girlfriend was mistakenly given the tapes.
     Following the offer of the tapes, Charles' girlfriend called the cops, leading to his firing.
     The firing lead to the suit, leading to the discovery process revealing the John Doe company's actions, which were an interesting revelation to Jan Pottker and PeTA as a whole.
